One second, I am standing, bracing for the impact of the bullets, and the next, I am staring at them just inches from my body, one coming straight for my face, suspended in the air. A burst of orange energy erupts as the bullets dissolve into dust, and all of the men close to Sky are flung backward.

Some hit the patio deck loudly while others are flung through the double pane glass sliding doors, the glass shattering with the impact. With them being human, the impact kills most of them immediately, except for a big guy lying on the deck, blood trickling down his cheek from his ear.

By this time, the men with us at the border, along with some of the other pack members, come running through the tree line, halting as they see the scene in front of us. I issue instructions to Ivan and Kira, who have shifted and put on some clothing handed out by some of our men, to check the survivor and see if any others are still alive.

"Now, " I say, snapping them out of their trance. I can understand why. The cause of this devastation hovering feet off the floor in the air, her beautiful red hair floating in the air as if she is submerged in water. Her eyes are closed, and her arms are out to the side while the snake-like marks on her wrists slither up and around her arms. She is once again stark naked, everything being singed off by the translucent orange flames engulfing her body.

I approach her slowly as Ivan walks toward me. He hands me some shorts, which I put on, only now realizing I'm still naked.

"I have called the pack doctor. He should be here soon. Only one is alive, and I don't know if he will make it," he reports.

"Ensure everything is done to save him. We need to find out what they want with her. When he is done, tell him to come upstairs and have a look at Skylar," I tell Ivan, my eyes going back to Sky.

"Kira, bring me a blanket, please," I ask, catching her attention as she instructs our men to move the bodies.

"Everyone who isn't doing something useful, leave." My voice booms around us, not bothering to look behind me at the crowd still standing close to the tree line. I can hear some whispering, and with my mood being less than tolerable, they need to leave before they anger me further. I understand people are curious, but I also don't like them seeing Sky this naked.

Kira comes over, a blanket in her hand.

"Stay back," I warn as I close the distance between Sky and myself.

I grab her hand, pulling her towards me, before putting one hand under, cradling her back, while my other hand goes under her legs.

The orange flames disappear, sucked back into the marks on her wrists, her body now completely limp in my arms. Kira walks over and places the blanket over her.

"I have ordered extra patrols and round-the-clock guards who will be posted on the property. Someone will be around first thing in the morning to replace the glass. We still don't know how they managed to get this far. They may have had assistance." Kira's anger that we had once again had a breach mirrors mine. Maybe someone from our pack was helping them, but who and why. Everyone was loyal. I couldn't fathom that it could actually be a pack member.

Fuck, Sky could have been killed. We all could have if not for her. I go inside, carefully avoiding walking on the glass and blood littering the outer deck. I healed quickly but wasn't in the mood for cut-up feet.

I gently place Sky on the bed in our room. Her face is flushed, and her forehead is warm to the touch.

Rummaging around in the closet, I find a pair of cotton nighties which I dress Sky in. With her getting too hot, I need to remove the blanket, and the last thing I need is the doctor eyeing her naked perfection.

Heading to the bathroom, I return with a cool washcloth, placing it along Sky's forehead, hoping to quell the fever ravaging her body. She hasn't moved during any of this, which worries me.

There is a knock on the door, and our pack doctor, Dr. Andrews, comes in. He is a serious person who I don't think I have ever seen laugh.

"Alpha, you asked for me." He walks over as I gesture for him to come in.

"Dr. Andrews, how is our Hunter doing?" I need that asshole alive. I needed information from him, and if he weren't dead now, I would certainly make him wish he was.

"He will survive, Alpha. He has been moved to our infirmary under heavy protection. I may need to operate."

"Make sure he survives, doc. I have plans for him," I say sinisterly before looking at Sky. The doc follows my gaze as I say, "She is burning up and unresponsive."

"May I?" He asks out of courtesy before he opens the bag he is carrying and moves to her side. Looking at me for approval, I nod and move away from Sky's side, giving the doctor room to do what he needs to do.

After some time passes, he finally finishes his assessment, the end indicated by his stethoscope being placed back in his bag. He pulls out some tablets, which he puts on the side table.

"Her heartbeat and breathing are steady, which you already know, and there is no sign of concussion or any injuries. She has a fever, so when she wakes up and if she still has a fever, give her one every four hours until the fever passes. Otherwise, she just needs rest."

After he leaves, I change the washcloth on Sky's forehead before climbing into bed beside her. I want to hold her but don't want my body heat to aggravate her fever. So, I lie beside her, holding her hand and listening to her breathing. Within minutes I am sleeping, exhaustion finally overpowering my desire to watch her sleep.
