Dmitri

"So, what does the scroll say?" Sky asks, trying to break the awkwardness that usually follows people knowingly interrupting something intimate and those being intimate knowing those that interrupted know.

Ivan and Kira could probably scent Sky on me, and anyone with eyes could see that something had changed between us. The interruption was necessary, with Sky's safety and the pack at risk. And I'm glad we were interrupted. I wanted to go so much further with Sky, but I wasn't sure she was ready. I wasn't sure I was. We had just started establishing some sort of open communication about how we were feeling. Sex may just complicate everything.

"Dmitri?" Sky is looking at me expectantly.

I already looked at the scroll while she was showering. It was written in ancient Latin, phased out centuries ago. Only those of us old enough even knew of its existence.

"Sorry. I got distracted. Loosely translated, it says something along the lines of:

'Cursed by love, hidden within,

the power of all, the legends begin.

Black or white, light or dark,

Fated mate, it starts with a spark.

Released by love, the act is done,

Bitten, everything before now is none.

There but not, absence is felt,

Can be recovered, the end is dealt.'

"I would have to consult with some of the Elders, Andrea perhaps, just to confirm I have it right."

Sky takes the scroll from me, looking at it as if it might sprout clues.

"From what happened earlier and the fact that you could only hear him, this must relate to you, the first word pretty much giving it away," I say to Sky.

I hand her the translation that I had written down. She studies it while I continue talking.

"Do we know how he got past our border and this far without being detected?" My question and gaze were directed at Ivan and Kira.

"We checked all the security footage we have during the time you indicated seeing him and sometime before that. Absolutely nothing was detected. As you already know, he is masking his scent, so we couldn't find a trail. He must have found a way around Raina's protection spell. That's the only way he could move so quickly, undetected, in and out of our territory." Ivan is frowning, frustration clear in his tone. I know he hated this as much as I did. It wasn't just Sky and our pack potentially in danger, but his mate Rene.

"I've already reached out to Raina. She will be here tomorrow. Maybe she can tell us how it happened," Kira says to me before she looks at Sky.

"Did he say anything else to you, Sky? Anything that can indicate who he is...where he comes from?"

"Nothing. Besides the ominous 'it's time, Skylar, ' nothing else was said."

"Okay. Well, we better be going. We will continue the investigation. In the meantime, we have increased surveillance on the property and anytime you leave. There will be a lot of people watching you, but don't worry, you won't even know they are there." Kira smiles at Sky, who looks perturbed.

I show Ivan and Kira out before heading back to the table. Sky has zoned out and is just staring into space.

"Are you okay?" I ask her, her head snapping back to mine.

She wants to say something, but she hesitates.

"Just say it, Skylar."

"I know it sounds strange, but that's the same person from my dream. I mean the exact same one. In the flesh. The dream I have been having since I was eighteen years old. It's the same hooded figure."

I remember her telling me about her dream when we were in Spain at my villa. And I had seen the effects of it once or twice when we ended up sleeping in the same room. Even in the beginning, when I had stalked her house and hovered outside her bedroom window. I could hear her moaning in her sleep quite often. And not in a pleasurable way.

She was looking at me like she needed to convince me, but I didn't need convincing.

"Skylar. You don't need to convince me. If you say it's the same person, I believe you. There have been so many odd events and strange occurrences that, at this point, anything is possible." I take her hands in mine and give them a gentle squeeze.

"I think you should have a lie-down. I'll make some breakfast and wake you when it's ready."

"Just for a minute. I doubt I'll sleep, though. There is so much going on. Up here." She taps her head, smiling at me before she gets up and heads to the lounge, plopping herself down on the couch.

By the time I have plated the cheese omelet I made for Sky and a bacon one for myself, she is fast asleep. I crouch down next to her, gently moving the hair covering her face behind her ear. The light dusting of freckles is more prominent from this distance, and I love how they dance on her cheeks and over her small nose. Her lips are slightly open, and her brow is smooth. She looks like she is having a peaceful sleep which I am grateful for. She has been going through a lot.

I put our food in the microwave, sleep winning over hunger. I gently scoop Sky up and walk to her room, positioning her softly on the bed. She stirs slightly as I climb in behind her before she snuggles her back against my chest. I pull her closer, my arms wrapped around her as she sleeps.

I tried keeping my distance, but it was becoming impossible. I found the feelings I had for her back then were not entirely extinguished by anger and a sense of me not meaning anything to her. Her admission that she left because she didn't want to be the cause of my dying by not completing the binding process with Savannah sat in my heart, dripping hope onto the open wounds.

Even though Chris' words were slightly exaggerated, Sky's gullibility had her believing everything he said, anything anyone said, as gospel. It was true that not completing the binding process weakened both parties involved, though the damage wasn't instantaneous. It happened over months, even years. But the end result wasn't always death, a fact Chris chose to omit in his storytelling to Sky.

That happened more so in situations where both parties were in love. Where the feelings were deep and intertwined. Usually, there was no need to reject binding when this happened, but it occasionally happened historically when parents disapproved of the match. For example, where high ranking wolves matched with lower-ranking wolves, and the parents disapproved of the match. But that was a long time ago, and laws are in place that prevent forced binding rejections.

My guess is he knew how Sky felt about me and wanted to force her into a situation where she left. And he managed to isolate her and keep her weak. Fucking knob. If I saw him again.

Sky turns around in my arms, her hands snaking around my torso as her head snuggles into my chest. This is heaven.

And with that thought, I doze off into the best sleep I have had in just over a year.
