Dmitri

The rage threatens to spill out and consume me, and I can see it already impacting those nearby. Some werewolves are cowering in submission, while other species have started taking a step back, fear evident in not only their expressions but also in their very energy. The only person who is not backing away is Sky, who places a gentle hand on my arm. Something in Savannah snaps as she looks at the two of us, lunging at Sky as she screams, "This is all your fault!"

She manages to push Sky, her body bashing into the pillar next to her. I catch her inches before her she hits the ground. Savannah stumbles to the side, almost falling herself before Ivan catches her.

Sky is out cold, her breathing labored, and a sweat forming on her brow.

"Get her out of here and get Raina immediately. Everyone else, get the fuck out of here." I roar, people scattering back inside. Ivan and Kira jump into action, Ivan taking Savannah inside while Kira heads to the meeting to get Raina. I lift Sky up as carefully as possible. She is light as a feather, skin, and bones.

I carry her as quickly and carefully as possible inside the castle and upstairs to the first bedroom on the second floor. Connecting with Kira, I let her know where I am while gently laying Sky down on the large bed, positioning her arms neatly by her side.

I stare at her beautiful face, praying to all the gods and goddesses that she will be alright. After what feels like years have passed, Kira finally comes bursting through the door with Raina, Ally, Andrea, and Chris in tow.

Ally is carrying a bag containing her herbal and medical supplies.

"Everybody out," Raina says as Ally reaches Sky's side. She is the best healer I have ever known. She can fix this.

Kira and Andrea immediately leave, while Chris hesitates, a look of guilt flashing over his face before anger replaces it when he looks at me. He storms out of the room. His footsteps can be heard echoing down the passage.

"You too, Dmitri," Raina says, throwing me a look before she crouches down next to Sky, her hand on her forehead. I leave, not because I want to but knowing they must do what they must, and I would just be in the way. Exiting the room, I close the door behind me. Ivan is coming up the stairs, Savannah nowhere to be seen.

"She is locked in a room on the far side of the castle. One of our men is watching her. Raina gave me a sedative to give her before she came here. If she doesn't calm down, she could end up harming the baby." Ivan looks around at each of us. "How is Sky?"

"We don't know yet." I am suddenly overcome with exhaustion. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. I head over to a set of chairs on the landing, the others following suit. We sit there in silence for a full five minutes before Andrea finally asks, "What happened?"

My closest friends are looking at me with questioning looks.

"It was a lie, Savannah and I being mates. I don't know how she did it, but the sparks I felt seemed real. They were even stronger than the ones I felt with Sky. I knew something was wrong, but I ignored it, thinking if I rejected her, my mate, it would damage the pack and each other. I couldn't feel the connection with her. I couldn't even touch her without feeling disgusted. I thought time would remedy the situation, but I was wrong."

"Fuck!" I shout, hitting the table next to me so hard it splits in two. "How could I be so stupid! The baby wasn't even mine. You know how guilty and ashamed I felt after that night, thinking about what I had done."

I don't need to look up to see the pity on their faces.

"After a while, we knew it wasn't working, so we put on a show in public while the reality at home was so far removed it was crazy. Just before I was about to call it quits, she fell pregnant. Then I felt like I couldn't end it, no matter what."

We sit in silence for a while, the anger building inside me.

"Kira, I need you to get all the information from Savannah about the guy she claims put her up to this. I want everything. Threaten her if you have to but get every last detail."

Before I can continue, Raina exits the room. We all rise, her expression indicating nothing good. "Andrea, make sure to find and detain Chris. We have some questions for him."

I'm apprehensive as I approach Raina, not sure I want to hear what she has to say.

"You need to prepare yourself, Dmitri. I can't tell you. I need to show you. But you must promise me you won't lose your shit." She gives Andrea and Ivan a pointed look, indicating they must stick around in case I lose it. "As long as she is alive, that's all that matters. I won't lose control."

"You say that now. She is alive, but she is in terrible shape. She will have to stay here for a while. Ally will remain to care for her, but I must leave. I need to make some inquiries back home about her condition."

"Andrea, this is a list of items Ally needs. Can you arrange for someone to pick them up? Someone who has access to a hospital."

"Sure." He takes the folded paper from Raina, handing it to a nearby guard. No words are exchanged, and in the blink of an eye, the guard is out the door.

"You two stay close by," she says to Ivan and Andrea before she heads back into the room.

Ally is standing by the side of the bed, changing a cooling cloth on Sky's forehead. Her maroon dress is discarded on the floor, a crisp white sheet covering her body.

"She has a fever, and she is severely malnourished and underweight. I will put her on fluids and morphine when they get the requested supplies. We will look at a meal plan when she wakes up. In the meantime, I have given her a herbal remedy to control the pain and fever." Ally looks at Raina as she stands up. Raina nods her head, her focus coming back to me.

"There's something else..." She slowly lifts the cover, revealing Sky's chest and lower body, before removing the sheet completely.

A loud growl bounces off the walls of the room.

I can't believe what I am seeing. Ally has covered her breasts with a bandage and left her panties on, but everywhere else is covered in bruises. The one on her left side is the darkest and largest. There is another one in the same shade on the ball of her shoulder. The rest are shades of blue, black, purple, green, and yellow. They litter nearly every part of her body. Her inner thigh has a large oval yellow bruise that looks to be a few weeks old, overlapping with a slightly newer one that is a bit darker. There is even one on her shin.

"There is a larger black one on her lower back, slightly bigger than this one," she points to the one on Sky's side, "as well as various other ones similar to what you see on the front. I really don't have an explanation for this. It doesn't look like she has been beaten, but I can't be sure. We will have to ask her when she wakes up. I honestly don't know how she has been managing this kind of pain. She didn't hit her head, so at least she doesn't have a concussion. She passed out from the pain. She really just needs loads of rest."

I zone out as I take in the picture in front of me. Reaching out, I touch her hand, tingles erupting at the touch—my Skylar. I should never have let her go. I did this. My eyes roam her body, taking in her thin frame with bruise after bruise. The steady beat of her heart is the only reassuring part. Rage builds, and I take a step backward. Raina senses it, too, as she calls out for Ivan and Andrea.

Their gasps remind me that Sky is in full view in her uncovered state.

"Cover her," I say quietly, turning around and exiting the room. I throw up just outside the door, the rage, anger, and guilt pushing everything out of my body.
