"Ms. DeCaso!" The teacher snapped.
Toni looked around and realized she was in a classroom at school. Oh. School. Shit. Toni had totally not been paying any attention to any of the classes that day. She had been up all night tossing and turning with guilt. She was barely able to make-out with her boyfriend the other night before curfew because she felt so jumpy and sweaty, and not in a sexy way either. She was afraid it was the nervous, slimy guilty sweat and struggled to find a believable excuse as to why she couldn't get more intense than playfully teasing.
"Sorry," she hoarsely choked out. The bell rang finally, and Toni jumped out of her seat so fast, it clattered to the floor. She yanked it back up and hurried out the door without even glancing at the teacher.
"Wait! Toni!" Alexa called and pushed through the crowd of students. Toni watched her get jostled and bumped till she finally managed to get over to her.
"Yeah, s'up?" Toni kept glancing at Luke's locker. He wasn't there yet. What could she say to him? Should she say anything about Fernando? She never envisioned herself being the type that'd squeal under pressure. She should be able to be suave and all whatev, cue the hair-toss. No big deal. And yet every time she was around him, she just wanted to confess all her sins. Ugh. She didn't even sin!
"Um, well...it's about you making-out with Fernando Alazar," Alexa admitted, stroking her blue streak that was left loose from the rest of her hair that was pulled back in a ponytail, exactly like Toni's hair.
Toni widened her eyes and couldn't keep from blushing. "What?" She gasped; her face stung as if it had been slapped.
"Y'know. A few nights ago. I've mean meaning to talk to you about it but -"
"What?" She demanded again; her heart was throbbing. This was exactly the kinda shit she was afraid of. Big mouths. Squealing. Ratting her ass out.
"I'm just saying...this whole thing could turn ugly if someone found out..." She fidgeted with her choker collar; it looked exactly like Toni's. It was insane how she knew exactly what the other girl was going to wear to school before they even seen each other, it wasn't like they texted each other either.
"Ugly? How the hell could this get out?" She demanded, feeling guilty and sweaty again. "You're the only one who seen anything!" She glared.
"Well...Fernando knows what happened. What if he decides he doesn't like you with Luke and starts spreading some... I dunno, nasty gossip or something, it could get pretty messy. You and I both know you don't need another shit-show of a year."
"He wouldn't do that!"
"Well...maybe Fernando won't say anything but...I feel like someone should tell poor Luke -"
Toni felt her jaw drop. "What? But-but you can't throw me under the bus! I'm your best friend!"
"Yeah. I know. But you just can't expect everything to be fine when it isn't." She widened her eyes for emphasis.
Toni narrowed her eyes but had them glued to the floor. Her face was screaming red, she could feel it. "What are you even talking about, Alexa? You have got to keep this on the way low down."
"No, I can't," she insisted. "This is so messed up, every time I look at Luke -or you- I wanna say something. And I think I will, even if I don't want to... y'know?"
Toni gasped and stared at her in horror. "You would never!" Her frantic nerves were crackling like pop rocks in her chest. She struggled to suppress her anxiety, but it felt like she was holding her own head underwater. She fought the urge to let her feelings surge up.
