All I could manage to do for several seconds was watch Jacob's retreating form, as he ran away from me and out of sight.

Jasper, having most likely felt the sudden shift of emotions, was out of the car and by my side in an instant.

"What happened? Are you okay?" He asked, concerned.

"Jacob imprinted." I responded, barely a whisper.

A mere second later, Alice was standing in front of me, and I looked at her, extremely confused.

"Where's Bella?" I managed to choke out.

"She's trying on clothes in the dressing room, Edward, she's fine." Alice answered.

Jasper then decided to speak up.
"He says Jacob imprinted. Does he mean on him?"

Dreading her confirmation, I glanced quickly at Alice, who simply nodded her head.

"That's why I suddenly can't see your future anymore. Its just like when Bella was spending all of her time with him only...darker. More...permanent." She explained.

I groaned, then a thought occurred to me...what must Jacob be feeling right now?

"Jacob.." I whispered.

"Get back to Bella. I'm taking him to Carlisle. Just tell her we caught the scent of a rogue vampire and were obligated by the treaty to check it out. Reassure her that everything's fine with a fake vision of us all at home later." Jasper told Alice, then looked at me.

"At least there's one saving grace. Rose and Emmett are still on their little vacation so, they won't be there to make the situation any worse." He finished.

I raised an eyebrow.

Emmett will tease. Rose will be infuriated.

He thought, bluntly.

I glanced towards Alice to find her already gone back inside the store, and before I could blink, Jasper was putting me in the passenger side of the Volvo.

Once we were both in the car, and flying down the road for home, I finally found my voice.

"How will they get home?" I asked, my brain refusing to cooperate fully with me.

"Esme can come pick them up when they're ready." He answered.

I stared straight ahead at the road in front of us.
"How is it possible for a wolf to imprint on its sole enemy?" I asked, still confused.

A sudden wave of calm washed over me, and I began to relax just enough for my brain to kick back into high gear.

"I have no idea, but you should talk to him after we meet up with Carlisle. He was pretty freaked out back there, scared even." Jasper answered, quietly.

My frozen heart ached a little at those words. Jacob Black scared? For some reason that really bothered me.

"Oh, God. What about Bella? She will never forgive me twice.." I groaned, burrying my face in my hands.

"She will, Edward." Jasper said, sending out another wave of calm. "Bella is a genuinely good person, and she loves you, so I think she would always want you to be happy. I believe she would always forgive you no matter what."

On some level, I knew that everything he said was true, but that just made everything even worse. All shes ever done is love me! And all I've ever managed to do is put her life in extreme danger, or hurt her. Here I am still hurting her, and while her life might still be in danger. I really was a monster..

"Oh, God." I groaned again.

"We're home." Jasper announced, causing me to look up.

We were parked in the driveway.

Quickly, we exited the Volvo, and in an instant, we were through the front door, and standing in the living room.

Carlisle and Esme were seated on the couch, as if they were waiting for us.

I texted Carlisle when we left.

Jasper's thought reached my MIMD as an explanation.

It was Carlisle's and Esme's thoughts that rattled me.

This has only happened once before...

This didn't go so well last time...

I blocked out everything else. It was too much at once.

Slowly, for a vampire, I made my way to the empty chair to the left of the couch. Jasper stayed standing.

"What's going to happen, Carlisle?" I asked, staring into his eyes, hoping for a hint of reassurance in them. No such luck.

"Honestly...I do not know. This is very new to all of us. I know that it's only happened once before." He answered.

I nodded once.
"And, what happened then?"

Carlisle studied me for a moment, just the slightest hint of hesitation in his eyes. He glanced quickly at Esme, who nodded, then turned back to me.

"When the other members of the pack discovered that their brother had imprinted on what they believed to be a monster, they tracked her down and destroyed her."

My entire body stiffened, and had there been any blood flowing through my veins, it would have stopped in that instant.

"They killed her..." I repeated to myself.

Suddenly, Esme spoke up.
"Things did not go so well for the young Quileute either, I'm afraid."

"What do you mean?" I whispered.

She gave me a solemn look before explaining.
"Once the object of a Quileute's imprint ceases to exist, they will mourne themselves to death. No longer able to eat or sleep, the Quileute will slip into a deep depression, and eventually pass away."

"You're telling me he died of a broken heart." It wasn't a question.

A sputter of slight panic shot through the room, and only then did I realize the amount of peace and calm Jasper had been sending out to us.

"So, what are you saying? That once the pack realizes what's happened, they will try to kill Edward?" He asked, stepping forward.

I searched Carlisle's eyes for any confirmation of Jasper's fear, but am I found was slight uncertainty.

"That, we're not entirely sure about. The treaty itself should keep them at bay, but as we all know, the treaty isn't some magical wall that will keep them out should they decide to attack. However, we don't know if they would even consider hurting Edward, considering what I'm sire they realize it would do to Jacob."

"Then there's just no way that Edward can be near him until we know for sure." Jasper replied, firmly, losing control over the calm he was trying to keep in the room for just a second.

I shook my head.
"I don't care. I need to speak with him. I need more answers, and the best way to get them is to go to the source." Saying this, I stood and headed to the door, but a hand on my arm stopped me.

"Be careful, my son, please." Esme whispered, worry shining bright in her eyes.

I managed a reassuring smile, and nodded once.
"I will."

Before Jasper could object any further, I was out the door and running as fast as I could towards the La Push Reservation.
