STEVE POV

"When was the last time you talked to Y/N?" Dustin asked, leaning closer to me as I continued folding clothes. "I haven't—no one has. We got back here and she just kinda took off. I mean I'm pretty sure she's still in Hawkins but I have no clue where exactly she is."

He groaned, "We need to find her, she doesn't need to be alone right now." I just nodded as he talked, "I'm done here. Do you have any ideas on where to look?" I asked as I folded the last piece of clothing. "Maybe." He said before motioning for me to follow him out the door.

"Henderson no offense, but I don't think she'd come here—the place is ripped apart." I stated, motioning to the remaining pieces of the Forest Hills trailer park. "There's a place not too deep in the woods her and Eddie would go and smoke in if Wayne was home Eddie told me a story about once." I nodded, "You think she's been hiding out in the woods?" He shrugged, "It's the best I can come up with—we need to check on her so would you just stop asking questions and follow me."

I rolled my eyes at the boy before following him past what was left of Eddie's trailer and into the tree line before we both stopped. "Do you hear that?" Dustin whispered, turning back to look at me. I nodded, looking around to see if I could find the source of what sounded like crying.

"Y/N!" Dustin suddenly called out. I heard the crying turn to little sniffles and gasps before I turned to where I thought it was coming from. "Steve—come on we don't need to split up." I heard Dustin complain as he followed quickly behind me before we were both in front of her.

Y/N was sat on the ground against a tree, holding her knees up to her chest and very slightly rocking herself back and forth. No doubt, she looked insane, but we both knew she needed help. "Hey Y/N/N." I said in a soft voice as I kneeled in front of her.

"Why don't you come with us—eat something, shower, maybe get some sleep." I offered but her eyes stayed glued to the ground, tears pouring out of them. I looked back to find Dustin just as confused as I was. 'What do we do?' Dustin mouthed at me as I stood up.

I just shrugged before sighing and fully sitting down beside her. Dustin sat on the other side of her as she continued on crying, not acknowledging either of us.

"I can't remember." She muttered after what felt like hours. The sun had began to set, casting an eerie glow on her face. "I've been trying and I-I just can't remember the last time I hugged him—I mean really hugged him." She started.

"I don't mean when I held him while he was dying, or when we gave each other a hug before going into the upside down because we thought the other might not come back. I mean just a real I love you hug. Not a 'goodbye, just in case I don't make it back' hug." I felt my eyes water as her voice broke.

"Why can't I remember." She whispered to no one in particular as she laid her head down on her knees. "Friday." Dustin said, turning to face both of us. "Right after Hellfire. That was the last you saw him before all of this started because you went to Nancys that night." He continued.

"I was still waiting on Steve to come get me and I had forgotten my hat so I walked back in and you guys were just standing there together." She picked her head up, sniffling as she looked over at him.

"It was kind of weird at the time—I'd never seen Eddie be so affectionate so I didn't wanna break the little moment you guys had but you just stood there, lightly swaying and I guess just holding onto each other. I don't know the reason, but I do know Eddie loved every minute of it. I'd never seen him look so relaxed—so at peace before, so I waited until one of you pulled away and pretended like I had just come back in to get my hat."

Y/N let out a sigh, sniffling as more tears ran down her face. "There wasn't a reason." She mumbled, harshly wiping her eyes as she smiled a little. "He just wanted a hug—you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at him but he was like that. He loved hugging me, he-he did it all the time. I never thought I'd be in a position where I'd want one because there was like a never ending supply of them—until now I guess." She laughed a little bitterly.

"Is it gonna stop hurting?" She suddenly asked, looking between the both of us. I gave her a soft smile and wrapped one arm around her as Dustin followed my motions, wrapping one of his arms around her. "Eventually." I muttered, "But for now—you'll just have to settle for us."

She laughed a little, nodding her head before leaning it over on top of Dustin's that rested on her shoulder. "Thanks guys." She muttered as we sat there, darkness overcoming the forest around us.

A/N: Thank you for this request! It was a little depressing—sorry I've been in a mood to write this type of stuff so I went ahead with this request over some others which I am getting to. Also school and work are stressing me tf out rn omg.
