"She's seizing! Someone get a gurney!"
"I can't find a pulse!"
"We have to sedate her!"
When Nick walked back into the hallway that led to Bailey's office a scene of horror exposed itself to him. There were about a dozen of people hovering over a small figure on the floor. It was Meredith and she was having a seizure. He couldn't see her face properly but he knew that it was her. And she was having a seizure.
He had just left for five minutes because there had been an emergency with one of his former patients and they had needed a consult.
He couldn't move, he was frozen.
"No! Wait! Don't sedate her she stopped seizing!"
"She's waking up!"
"Dr. Grey? Can you hear me?"
She stopped seizing. Now her body was unconsciously and limb, laying on the floor in an awkward position. The nurses and residents surrounding her now turned her onto her back, trying to get her to respond to them. And as he saw Meredith's foot slightly moving he was somehow pulled back into reality and he quickly walked over to them, kneeling down next to Meredith's head, looking at her pale face.
Unknowingly tears were streaming down his cheeks as he looked at her small figure, praying that she would be okay. That she didn't suffer any brain damage from the seizure. And then her eyes twitched as if she was moving them beneath her eye lids. "Mer? Can you hear me?" he asked quietly, carefully stroking her cheek with his thumb.
Very slowly she opened her eyes and looked up at him and as he looked back at her he could see so much fear in her eyes that his heart almost stopped beating. She looked at him as if all the progress she had made with battling her anxiety and getting more self-confident again had just been deleted as if someone pressed a button to kill everything she had achieved.
"Mer?" he asked again, still scared that she couldn't move her legs anymore or her arms or that she couldn't speak, that she couldn't recognize him. But when she closed her eyes again and weakly tried to grab his hand he knew that she recognized him. He knew that she could still move her arms and that she had heard him. But could she speak? Why wasn't she speaking to him?
"Meredith please say something. Just one word." He pleaded, stroking the back of her hand with his thumb.
And right in this second the door to the chief's office opened and Bailey suddenly stood there, right in front of where everyone was still hovering over Meredith. One of the residents had started to insert an IV to make sure Meredith would stay hydrated and someone else had brought an oxygen-tank in case she would start panicking or have another seizure.
"What happened?" Bailey asked one of the residents, completely ignoring Nick, who was looking at Bailey with nothing but anger in his eyes. Before Meredith had walked into that office everything had been fine. She had been happy just ten minutes ago. But now was not the time to wonder about what had happened in that office. The only thing he needed to worry about right now was Meredith and since he couldn't undo the past he needed to make sure that she would be okay now.
"She had a seizure, we need to get her into a trauma room to examine her, maybe she had a stroke. She doesn't seem to have a fever, she's responsive and can still move her limbs she just hasn't spoken yet." A nurse explained to the chief as another one just arrived with a gurney. "Let's get her onto the gurney." The resident who had inserted the IV said as they had lowered the gurney onto the ground.
"No, wait please. Meredith, come on talk to me. Just say one word okay? I know that you can talk." Nick said tearfully, pushing everyone and anything around him aside as he just needed Meredith to be alright. He needed her to say something. It took her a few seconds to open her eyes again but this time they just looked empty. After another few seconds of silence Meredith opened her mouth just a tiny bit but nothing came out. She still wasn't talking. "Please Mer." Nick said again but she just shook her head. It was just an extremely light movement that almost wasn't noticeable but she did shake her head before closing her eyes again.
With the help of the residents Nick lifter Meredith onto the gurney, not letting go off her hand as they brought her over into the ER. "Page Shepherd. No other neurosurgeon, I want Shepherd." Nick said as Amelia was the only one he trusted with Meredith and from whom he knew that she would do everything she could to help Meredith. "Shepherd is too close she's not objective. Page Nelson!" Bailey ordered which sent Nick over the edge.
"No! Don't you dare get Nelson. Shepherd is the only one who's competent enough in this hospital to actually help Meredith instead of making her sicker and sicker. This is all your fault. I have no idea what happened in your office but before Meredith went in there she had been happy and you did something that now caused her to have a damn seizure. So, you don't get to say anything in this." He yelled at her as all the other residents tried to ignore them and the one who was supposed to get Amelia was now slowly turning around and walking out of the room.
"Dr. Marsh I'll have to ask you to leave this room so we can help Grey." Bailey said calmly which made Nick even angrier. "No. You are leaving. Right now. Get out of here." He yelled right into the chief's face. Bailey looked at him in disbelief but apparently decided to not counter anything else so that she followed his instructions and left the room. He knew that he had just made a huge mistake and that it wouldn't take five more minutes until the hospital's security would drag him out of the hospital.
