Stevie believed that she had successfully avoided an unnecessary public argument with Lindsey. She stepped into the elevator and pressed the button of the floor she was staying at and leaned against the nearest wall. Just as the doors were closing, Lindsey managed to squeeze himself through and she sighed. Before she could open her mouth, he pressed his body against hers, one hand on her hip, the other flat against the wall above her head. She knew, what that was, and she considered to just let it happen, but he didn't move.
"What do you want from me?" Stevie asked breathing out heavily. "I thought, you wanted to have a drink in peace. Why did you follow me?"
"Don't tell me, you didn't want me to." Lindsey smirked, he then leaned in closer to kiss her exposed neck. He pulled back rather quickly, though, his faced turned into a frown. She wasn't exactly showing much interest. "What's wrong?"
"I'm tired, Lindsey." Stevie weakly pushed at his chest and moved to get out of the elevator when it stopped. Why tonight out of all nights are we staying on the same floor?
If Lindsey had wanted to go to his room, he would have had to take a turn in the opposite direction, but he was right behind Stevie. There was something different about her tonight. He wasn't used to her being so apathetic. If not love him, at least she would always fight him.
"Are you okay?" Lindsey asked, genuine concern in his voice.
"Fine." Stevie shrugged as she stopped by her room. "Goodnight, Lindsey."
Lindsey put his hand over hers and Stevie gave him an almost pleading look to let her go. He did, but he didn't pull his hand away completely. He let his fingertips slide up the length of her arm until his palm rested on her shoulder and he turned her slightly more towards him.
"I'm sorry." Lindsey said and the small smile on Stevie's face confused him.
"What are you sorry about?"
"So many things." Lindsey gulped, his hand hand wandered to the back of her neck and he pulled her in, his arm wrapped firmly around her shoulders. "Right now, I'm sorry for being a total jerk tonight. I'm just so used to us acting towards each other that way, it- it's..." He trailed off with a shrug. "It's normal for us."
"Sadly." Stevie nodded her head against his chest, allowing herself to be this close to him for a moment longer. "I'm alright, really, but I am exhausted. Physically and emotionally." She added, feeling unexpected tears in her eyes. "We've been travelling the world for so long, I've been high and drunk for the most part, you and I have been at each other's throats constantly, I- I just need this to end, Linds."
The look on her face, when she tilted her head up to lock their eyes, broke his heart. It had been so long since he'd seen that Stevie that he didn't really know what to say or what to do. He could kiss her, but he had already tried that and she didn't seem to enjoy it. He could let her go, but then he would stay up all night worrying. He could-
"I'm going to bed." Stevie interrupted his train of thought, taking a step back.
Stevie lingered for a second longer and Lindsey knew, she was silently asking for him to do something, but he didn't know what it was. She was already inside her room, holding onto the door handle, staring at him as he stood out in the hallway like an idiot, not having said anything for what felt like the longest time. Fuck it.
"Can I stay with you?" Lindsey finally spoke up. "Not to, you know... just to be with you." He added, waiting for her to hopefully say, yes.
