To stop him from running away, we tied a worn out rope around his legs. We had scoured the room trying to find something to incapacitate his movements. The torn and tattered fibres formed several knots down the length. The old man's face screwed up in pain as the fibres from the ropes scratched at his varicose vein covered legs.
River slung the old guy over my shoulder, and we set off on the perilous trek back to headquarters. The sun had officially set giving way to the pale moonlight that cast its eerie shadows. The light had illuminated the mud covered trail, and the flooded path, which had grown knee deep. The old man continued to wail as the rope keeping his legs together eventually became soaked as we slogged through the overflowing forest. Eventually the path dried up and moonlight lit our way home.
''Hey Ivy?''. The old man asked
''Yes old man''
''What's going to happen to the necklace?"
''It's going back to where it belongs''
''And what about me?''He asked, shuddering.
''You'll probably rot in jail for the remainder of your pathetic life, wishing you were dead, and trust me jail is no fun''.
''Have you been to jail?'' He questioned.
''Once. In monopoly.''
The old man gave one of his signature whimpers and we carried on through the path.
The trees in the forest had a sickly brown colour and poison grains begrimed the bark bathed in silver light. Furry shadows stalked the trees, as the soft sounds of leaves crunching filled the air.
''What was that?'' the old man cried. The howl of a wolf appeared to reply and was soon followed by more. Before we knew it wolves began to roam the sooty coppices, drooling over their prey, their eyes aflame with desire, spreading blood across their heavy features.
''We gotta move'' River called.
''Yeah I don't want to be wolf food''. The old man sobbed.
We quickened our pace, almost sprinting away from the wolves. The harsh thuds of our footsteps and the swish of loosened rope filled the air. The wolves howls had silenced and we were met once again by the eerie silences of the forest canopy. River threw the old man on the ground and quickly tied the rope back around his ankles. I helped hoist him back onto Rivers' shoulders and we continued back to headquarters.
