I stood behind a podium in front of a sea of reporters. River proudly stood behind me as bright flashes went off from every direction.
"You don't have to stay here" I whispered.
"I'm not leaving until all these idiots finally leave you alone" He replied, knocking the newly polished crown sideways on my head.
"You idiot" Aspen gasped as she immediately came to my aid, making sure the crown was straight and positioned correctly on my head. Then making her way down to the silk layers of the skirt, making sure they were straight and princess perfect.
"Aspen, do you really need to do that now?" River questioned.
"Do you really need to open your mouth every five seconds?" she retorted.
"Oh fuck me" I muttered under my breath, rubbing my eyes tiredly as I continued to be blinded by camera.
"When and where?" Aspen asked excitedly.
"Don't you have a girlfriend?" River asked.
"Of for god sa-" I was interrupted by the large mass of reporters as they suddenly began to blurt out questions".
"Your majesty, who are you wearing?" A woman with bright red lipstick asked, as she shoved her microphone deeper towards my direction.
"Don't know and does that really matter?" I asked. The reporter looked away feverishly and made her way to the back of the pack. Another reporter pushed forward.
"Your highness, what do you plan to do now that your Queen?" A man with Harry Potter glasses asked.
"Continue my parents legacy and treat the people of Findara with the same respect and treatment they deserve '' He giddily wrote down my answer and disappeared as quickly as they appeared. "Is that all the question?"
"Oh Queen Lavinia, over here!" A reporter cried from the middle. I glanced over as she pushed her way through. "Your partner was a man while you were at REPS, and they say with every powerful man and powerful woman stands behind him. Was this the case for you?"
"I don't know. I never stood behind him" I smiled wryly, as her mouth dropped wide open. I quickly waved and got down from the stage and walked back to the castle, followed by River and Aspen. A loud chorus of gasps and murmurs echoed behind us.
We walked into the lounge room and flopped down on the large beige couches. Aspen kissed my cheek, muttering something about urgent business before leaving the building, leaving River and I alone to wallow in our thoughts.
"This may be a bad time, but did you think about what you said earlier?"
"Yeah I did"
"And what did you decide?"
"River.."
"It's okay, I think I already know the answer.
"No, River, I need to explain. I love you every time my heart beats. I love you so much it physically hurts. But we will not last if we never see each other".
"It's Okay Ivy. I understand. I just need you to know that I will be waiting. I'll be waiting for you until the day we meet again, because I love you to the moon and back". He stood up and pressed one last kiss to my lips, as if it was the last time he would ever see me. He stood up, smiled sadly before walking out the door.
I sighed and flopped back on the couch wallowing in self pity. Thinking of plans for the next six months, making sure Octi would be in good hands. I continued to lay there until a guard rushed to my side, yelling something about the prisoners downstairs. I got up and ran downstairs only to find three bodies hanging from the ceiling...
Turns out the moral of the story is no matter how much we try, no matter how much we want it. Some stories just don't have a happy ending.
And this is one of those stories.
