The next morning Sophie woke to her phone alarm, she checked her phone and saw she had a message from Will,
'Hi Sophie, thank you for being so supportive last night, just wanted to let you know that Dad sadly left us peacefully at 3am this morning x,' her stomach dropped,
'Oh god, poor Will,' she heaved herself out of bed and went to the toilet. She headed to the kitchen afterwards and put the kettle on for tea. Sophie stood leaning against the counter, debating how to reply to the message. She heard a thud and a few minutes later a rather dishevelled looking Mya slouched into the kitchenette,
'Bleurgh,' said Mya, 'How drunk was I last night, I er, don't actually remember getting in,'
'Well, you were starting to be a bit of a dick so pretty drunk,' said Sophie, turning round and busying herself with mugs,
'Oh jesus, sorry Sophie, what did I say?'
'Nothing really, I told you that Will cancelled following a family emergency and you told me he probably got a better offer,' she replied raising her eyebrows at her, Mya rubbed a hand over her face,
'Urgh, right ok, I'm guessing the family emergency is something that's going to make me feel like a complete twat now?' she asked, wincing,
'His dad died,'
'Fuck, yup of course, that's a pretty good excuse, sorry Sophie,'
'It's fine, I'm sure you are suitably suffering,'
'Oh most definitely, I feel like I've been run over,'
'Good, coffee?' replied Sophie, trying not to laugh at her, Mya replied by clasping her hands together in a pray motion at her, before slinking off to collapse on the sofa, once she had coffee she started to improve,
'Was Will ok?' she asked Sophie,
'Not really, obviously, his dad had a massive heart attack I think and never recovered, so sad, he was so upset on the phone, I was surprised he called me to be honest,'
'Yeah, nice but odd? what happened then, run me through it,' asked Mya, hugging her coffee cup,
'I had a missed call and a text when I got off the metro and he called me and apologised for standing me up, he was on the Eurostar had just got out the tunnel in England and was on his way to the hospital, then he said he would let me know what happened. Then just after I left the restaurant he called me again, his dad was in intensive care at that point but very sick and we talked, then he went, I woke up to a text saying he had passed away in the night,'
'God that's so awful, poor Will,'
'I know, maybe he doesn't have any close friends that he felt comfortable talking to, he was very upset,'
'Understandably, I don't know what I would do without my dad,' said Mya,
'He was just so open with his emotions, he cried,'
'And you're surprised because he's so different to Stuart?'
'Exactly, complete opposite, it made me think about my mum too, I hope to have a lot more time with her,'
'This is why I try not to grow up, being an adult is so serious,' said Mya, Sophie chuckled,
'What a year!' she replied, 'Right, we need bucket loads of croissants,'
'Obscene amounts of croissants,' Mya agreed, Sophie chucked some clothes on and popped over the road to the bakery opposite, the smell of yeast and sugar was intoxicating as she opened the door. She bought a small pain, 6 plain croissants and 2 almond croissants heavy with cremé de almonde. By the time she got back, Mya had managed to peel herself from the sofa and make more coffee for them both, they curled up on the sofa, having pulled over a small coffee table which they had laden with butter, jam, coffee and plates and stuffed their faces,
