I was sitting on Ariel's couch with a glass of wine in my pajamas.
"So you ready to explain why you just showed up here?" Ariel asked and I sighed.
"Okay remember Max, the guy my mom was dating when she passed away?" I asked and Ariel nodded.
"Yeah he always seemed nice." Ariel said and I nodded.
"Well I ran into him the other day when I went shopping and we were catching up. He gave me his card and we planned dinner tonight together to catch up." I said and Ariel smiled.
"Okay so what's the problem?" Ariel asked and I realized then I couldn't tell her about my father having me followed.
"Just too many people at my house asking questions." I said and she sighed.
"Plus a very cute one..." Ariel said and glared at her.
"Jake...I don't know....-" I saying an Ariel looked at me.
"Jake?" She asked confused.
"Jensen is his last name. Jake Jensen." I said and Ariel nodded.
"So what is going on with you two?" Ariel asked and I shrugged.
"I thought something but then my dad caught us sleeping on the couch one morning since we fell asleep watching a movie and Jake panicked saying there was nothing between us." I said, Ariel rolled her eyes.
"Men..." Ariel said and I nodded. She then noticed my necklace. "That's beautiful." She said and I smiled.
"From Max. I guess he bought it to give to my mom before she died and he had just been holding on to it since." I said and she smiled. We were silent for a few minutes.
"How are you doing with that anyway? I mean the anniversary is coming up in a few weeks." Ariel said and I nodded.
"Yeah I know, I try not to think about it honestly." I said and Ariel sighed as I placed my head on her shoulder.
"I don't know what I would have done if it wasn't for you and Callie I don't know what I would have done." I said and Ariel smiled.
"We loved your mom so much like she was ours too. We were always going to be there for you." Ariel said and I smiled as I finished my wine. I sighed and got up.
"I take it I can have the guest room?" I asked and Ariel laughed.
"Of course. You going to bed?" She asked and I nodded.
"Yeah, it's been a day." I said and she nodded.
"Good night." Ariel said and I headed upstairs. I got in the spare room and checked my phone. I opened it tons of text messages.
CLAY: Did you at least make it to Ariels?
CLAY: I would love to talk this out with you.
CLAY: We really should have a major talk and fix this. I don't like this.
I just sighed seeing his and then I had some from Jake.
JAKE: You okay?
JAKE: He didn't have you followed because he doesn't trust you, he wants you safe. All of us do.
JAKE: Shaney...please.
I groaned at this.
SHANE: Don't called me Shaney, Jake.
JAKE: It got you talking at least.
SHANE: No, this is me stopping communication with all of you. You all cross a line and couldn't let me have a dinner with someone who I was close to once. I never needed any of your permission while my father was gone. The minute everyone remembers I'm an adult I'll be back.
I put my phone on the nightstand and laid staring at the ceiling. I knew my dad worried but I had made it years without him and I didn't need him to come in now life he was father of the year and try to dictate my life.

I woke up the next morning to the doorbell being rung and I sighed knowing it wasn't my house. I looked at the clock and it was 9am and I knew Ariel was at work. I walked downstairs and sighed seeing Aisha when I opened the door.
"How did you get the follow me duty? Draw the short straw?" I asked and she sighed.
"Listen, I come here as a slight surrender. I think we should talk, air everything out and get everything out in the open. I can maybe even give you some insight on your dad while he been gone." Aisha said and I groaned.
"Let me get dressed. Come on in. There should be coffee in the kitchen." I said and she walked in as I pointed to the kitchen. I went back to the room I was in and grabbed my phone.
SHANE: Aisha really?
JAKE: We didn't think you would want to talk to a guy...
SHANE: I didn't want anyone Jake, you all just need to back off. I will go out Aisha but one wrong move...
JAKE: Got it...I will warn everyone.
I put my phone down and took a quick shower, packed my stuff and headed downstairs.
"Ready to go? We can go get breakfast." I said and she nodded.
"Sounds great." Aisha said as we left Ariel's house and I locked up. I shot her a quick text as I got in the car.
SHANE: Aisha showed up this morning and she is wanting to talk and figure some things out.
ARIEL: Will you need an alibi if this goes south?
SHANE: Most likely so stay available.
ARIEL: Got you! You staying tonight?
SHANE: I don't know, I'll let you know. 😊
I smiled and put my phone away and looked at Aisha sitting in my passenger seat.
"Ready?" I asked her and she nodded as I pulled out of Ariel's driveway.
