"What is this?!" I heard a booming voice say the next morning and I woke up seeing I was laying with my head on Jake's chest and his arm was around me. Jake stood up quickly making me fall on the couch, I looked at him annoyed and then I saw Clay standing there as I sat up.

"We fell asleep watching a movie, calm down." I said and Clay just groaned.

"So, is this a thing??" Clay asked and I just looked at him annoyed.

"So, what if it is?" I asked.

"Which it's not!" Jake said. I just looked at him and groaned.

"Jake...don't be scared of my father." I said. "You also have no room to say anything! At least Jake is closer to my age!" I continued.

"Are we still on this subject?!" Clay asked.

"You can be so infuriating! It was a movie, we had popcorn, we talked and fell asleep." I said and Clay just groaned. I walked back into the living room, grabbed the blanket we had been using and started folding it.

"I don't get you sometimes." Clay said and I just looked at him confused.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"You hate my life, you hate the way I live. You never know if I'm alive or dead, yet you are willing to possibly get in a relationship with someone on my team." Clay said and I groaned.

"I never said we were dating! God! We watched a movie!" I yelled and threw the blanket on the back of the couch and went upstairs. I quickly took a shower and then got dressed. Once I got downstairs, I noticed everyone was up and things we kind of silent.

"I'm going out." I said going out the front door and leaving. As I got to my car the front door opened and I saw Clay standing there.

"What?" I asked opening my car door and turning back to him.

"Where are you going?" Clay asked.

"Don't worry about it. I will stay out of your life and you stay out of mine. That's how you wanted this all along right?" I asked.

"Hey! Woah!" Clay said rushing off the porch and coming up to me.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Clay asked.

"Nothing, I'm just going to go out for a while." I said and Clay groaned.

"What is going on? Do you want us gone?" Clay asked and I shook my head.

"No, I don't want you guys gone. I have liked having you here but I just need you to understand how things need to go from now on." I said and he slightly shook his head.

"Which is?" Clay asked.

"Which is I'm an adult and can make my own decisions. You may not like it because you were never around but that's the problem and fact you need to get over. It was the choice you made when mom told you she was pregnant with me." I said and Clay looked at me oddly.

"Woah, back the train up! What do you think happened when I found out your mom was pregnant?" Clay asked.

"You left! You guys had a good thing going, she got pregnant and you left!" I said and Clay hung his head.

"I had to Shaney, to keep you both safe." Clay said.

"We would have been safe with you! I wanted my father!" I yelled not caring that I was outside.

"You think I liked staying away?" Clay asked and I groaned.

"I don't know, you seemed to do it easy enough!" I said. I then looked at Clay. "Let me show you what I saw from you my whole life growing up." I said getting in my car and driving away. I wasn't sure where I was going but I just knew I had to get away for a few hours. I ended up at the mall and decided some retail therapy would be just what I needed. After about an hour of shopping I stopped at the coffee shop in the mall for a small break. I as enjoying my drink when someone walked up to the table.

"Shane?" He asked and I looked up and gave a smile.

"Max?! Oh my god hi!" I said standing up and hugging him.

"How have you been?" Max asked as I gestured to the empty chair at the table I was sitting at and he sat down.

"Uh...stressed." I said with a small laugh and he looked concerned.

"You okay?" Max asked and I sighed with a nod.

"Yeah, I'm fine just a lot going on." I said.

"Listen, I know I kind of disappeared after your mom died but I didn't think you would care to have me around in your life anymore." Max said. Max and my mom were dating for about a year before she died. Once she died he was gone, without a trace.

"Well, it was weird." I said and he sighed.

"I know it was just I didn't know how to deal with the tragedy." He said and I groaned.

"Yeah, well I'm used to men walking out of my life so you leaving was nothing new." I said and he sighed and nodded.

"Your dad, your mom never said much about him just that he was never really around." Max said and I nodded.

"Yeah, so you leaving wasn't too much of a shock." I said and he grabbed my hand that was resting on the table.

"Shane, I know I screwed up but if you ever need anything I would love to help you." Max said and I smiled slightly shaking my head.

"That isn't necessary. Honestly, I work, make good money, have my house...everything is fine." I said and Max just shook his head. I noticed him them looking around sensing something I was concerned. "Everything okay?" I asked and he nodded and smiled.

"Yeah, I just noticed the time and I have to get going but here..." He said pulling out a business card. "If you ever need my help, for anything, you give me a call." Max said and I took the card from him and I smiled. I got up when he did and he gave me another hug and was gone. After sitting alone for a few minutes, I was putting the card in my purse when I someone else came walking up to my table and I looked to see Jake. I rolled my eyes, grabbed up my bags and walked away from him.

"Shane, wait..." Jake said and I shook my head.

"Why should I?" I asked and he groaned.

"I want to talk." Jake said.

"Can you just answer me one thing?" I asked and he sighed.

"I can try." He said.

"Why did you panic this morning? My dad asked if we were a thing and you were quick to say we weren't. Why can't it be? Aren't you allowed to be happy and with someone? Aren't I?" I asked and Jake just looked at the ground where we had stopped to talk.

"You don't want me Shane. You admitted last night that your dad never being home was hard on you growing up. I can't do that to you in this stage of your life." Jake said and I just half nodded.

"Fine." I said and continued to walk losing Jake in the crowd of people.
