"Uh, Mr Small? Are you ok?" Rob asked, sitting on the couch while looking at Steve, who was blankly staring at a wall. "Oh, Rob! Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking about some stuff" Steve said, snapping out of it and smiling at Rob. It had been a couple weeks since him and Larry had "adopted" Rob. They were really just taking care of a random kid Steve found while shopping. "What's that?" Rob said, staring at a bowl with foil over it. "I don't know. Larry said not to touch it until later tonight" "Hey, where is Larry? I haven't seen him all morning" Rob said, starting to walk towards the kitchen counter with his empty bowl. "He was up all night, and apparently he left the house at like 5 am to get whatever this is, so now he's in bed sleeping like a baby" Steve said, leaning on the counter and sipping his tea. "He's been sleeping for a while. He was passed out when I woke up" "Then how do you know he was up all night and got that?" Rob said, sitting at the counter. Steve froze. He did not want to explain how he knew. "Uhh" he started, trailing and looking around and staring at everything except Rob. Then he saw Larry coming down the stairs. "Oh, Sunshine! You're finally awake!" Steve said, quickly changing the subject and getting up. "You look like shit" Rob said, straight faced with a flat tone. Larry looked at him and smirked. Steve was taken aback and was going to say something but after seeing how Larry had reacted, he just decided not to. "You try staying up all night after getting a good night's sleep for months" Larry said, walking towards Rob and sitting down close to him. "I've never had a good night's sleep. I have insomnia" Rob said, with his same straight face and flat tone. It was quiet for a moment because nobody really knew how to continue that conversation. Steve broke the silence. "Larry, would you like some breakfast?" He said, leaning on the counter, looking at his boyfriend. "Yeah, sure" Larry said, smiling. "Gay" Rob said, smiling. Larry laughed and Steve giggled at the joke. While Steve was cooking, Larry and Rob talked. They were fairly similar. "Are you friends with Gumball now?" Larry asked. They were on the topic of Rob being enrolled in Elmore junior high again (mostly about how Rob found it extremely annoying that Steve would always make a point to make sure everyone knew Rob was his "adopted" son). "I guess. He's much nicer now. Still annoying as hell, but he's not terrible" Rob said, leaning on his hand. "Darwin is insufferable when Mr Small is around though. He will not shut up about him, you and me. Oh God and Sarah is even worse. She just shoves her weird fanfiction about you guys in my face all the time". "School sounds great" Larry said, smirking. "You suck, Larry" Rob said, smiling. Steve walked over to the counter and handed Larry a plate and kissed his forehead. "The hell was that for?" Larry said, starting to turn red. Rob started snickering. "I have my reasons for what I do" Steve said, smiling and taking Rob's empty bowl away. "You turned Larry into a fucking tomato, Mr Small" Rob said, laughing. It was pretty true. Larry's face was red all over and he was slumped into his chair. "Aw, don't worry. He'll be fine. He does this all the time" Steve said, smiling smugly while walking over to the counter and sitting in between Rob and Larry. He kissed Larry again, this time on the cheek. Rob started laughing harder when Larry covered his face with his hands. Steve smiled. He had successfully made Rob laugh. Well, technically, Larry had made him laugh, but Steve caused Larry to do the action that made Rob laugh, so that was close enough. He had made Rob laugh before, and he was sure Rob liked him, but he always found it nice to make Rob smile. Rob had such a terrible past, and Steve had caused part of it. He wasn't directly responsible, but he did cause a good portion of Rob's trauma, and he felt guilty about it all the time. The only thing that made him feel a bit less guilty was seeing Rob smile at something he said or did. "Steve, you suck" Larry said, lifting his face from his hands and elbowing his boyfriend. Steve giggled at this for multiple reasons. "Darwin would have lost his shit if he saw this on a regular basis. Oh God, I think Sarah would die" Rob said, laughing. "Trust me, we know what happens when Darwin sees us doing anything together. One time Steve literally just said 'hello' to me while Darwin was walking down the halls and he started smiling uncontrollably" Larry said, leaning forward to look past Steve. "Oh, Larry, remember the time he told us to kiss in the middle of the hall" Steve said, giggling. "God, don't remind me" Larry said, smiling. They all just sat there in silence for a few minutes. A good silence. A peaceful silence. A comfortable silence. Steve couldn't help it and hugged them both out of the blue. He was a strong hugger, so Rob and Larry had no way out of it. They were stuck against the clouds side, under his arm. It wasn't a first for them. Steve would always work his way in-between Rob and Larry, then hugging them tightly when they least expected it. He was a big fan of surprise hugs. Even while Rob was in class or when Larry was working. It was something they had grown used to, and Larry had started enjoying it. Rob found it embarrassing when he was in public, but it was nice to have some affection when nobody was there to see him being hugged by his dorky-hippie dad. "I love you guys" Steve said, squeezing them tighter and kissing Larry on the top of his head. Rob had sensory issues with things like that, but he got the message when Steve did stuff like that to Larry during his surprise group hugs. "Yeah yeah, you too" Rob said, smiling and hugging back. Once he did, though, he felt Larry's arms that had already been wrapped around Steve. Man, his dad's were inseparable. "Hmmph" Larry grumbled, seemingly in agreement. They stayed like this for a bit until Steve finally released them. "I'm going to go shopping. You two are staying home together" he said, walking over to the door and putting his sandals on. They seemed like the only shoes he had, aside from his sailor moon boots, but he kept those in his room with the rest of his cosplay. He had recently started carrying a purse with him. He claimed it looked nice, but Rob and Larry both knew it was because he liked feminine things but didn't want to admit it. It was understandable, though. He grabbed his purse and then walked back over to Larry and Rob. He kissed Larry and patted Rob on the shoulder before leaving. "You should just marry him already, Larry" Rob said, getting up and walking over to the couch, and Larry followed. "I'm not getting married to the man I've been dating for less than a year, Rob" Larry said, then pausing. "Man, it feels weird to say man in that sentence. I did not think I was gay" Larry said, leaning back. "I definitely wouldn't have taken you for someone who would date a hippie, much less a male hippie" Rob said, getting comfortable on the couch. "Oh yeah? What would you take as my type?" Larry said, chuckling. "Not Mr Small, I can tell you that much" Rob said, grinning. "You can call him Steve, Rob. You don't always have to refer to him like he's your teacher" "he is my teacher though" "Rob, you get my point" "yeah, I do. But wouldn't he get mad at me?". Larry just blankly stared at Rob with surprise. "No, Rob, trust me, he would not. I've heard him talk about you. He gets excited if you refer to him as your caretaker. He's happy that you acknowledge him. He will not be mad if you call him by his first name" Larry said. He tried to pay attention to his tone. It was difficult, but after years of customer service, he had gotten somewhat ok at making his tone sound alright if he really concentrated. "What if I called him dad?" Rob said, playing with his fingers. "Are you kidding me? He would love that. He sees you as his son. He talks to me about how he wants you to see him as your dad and call him any variant of Dad" "Really?" "Of course, Rob. I wouldn't lie to you" Larry said, smiling. "Alright then, Dad" Rob said, smiling. Larry was speechless. So he just hugged Rob.
