"The cost of breaking a spell is the consequence of a sacrifice. "

'The weather is not in our favour!' I shouted as I approached Nathaniel. The ship is too wet and some of his crew went to their cabins leaving me and him on deck. I could tell he was trying to get a better view to avoid crashing on a rock or probably another ship. 'What do you suggest Nathaniel?' I asked as I stood beside him. My hands are clutching the rails as tight as I can to avoid falling or worse.

Nathaniel glanced at me for a second before averting his gaze away from me. 'It is your call milady.'

I gasped playfully. 'A buccaneer with manners? That is a first.'

'Not all stories you hear about us are true Zadie.' He stated. 'Yes, we are exiled and banned from partaking in anything that involves the mainland.'

'Apart from stealing goods from the mainland.' I added mockingly.

Nathaniel chuckled. 'Well, and that too. We are thieves, I agree but some of us were not born this way by choice.' He spoke up as the howling wind seemed to howl with a sheer force that turned into an angry growl of nature. 'Each and every person in here has a story.'

'Since everyone knows my story, what is yours? What made you become who you are?'

'Kicked out by my father at age twenty. To cut the story short, I opposed the idea of taking young women just for bedroom pleasures for older men. 'He sighed. 'They were too young I just could not watch their future ruined like that. 'His tone was softer. 'It was a room full of politicians, seeking young girls to take home for the night without their consent.'

'Rape.' I spoke up. 'Seeking young wives to Rape. Factual truth.'

'Well, I had a major altercation with my father who was one of the men in that room. All of them were mad at me and threatened to have me hanged if I were to expose them.' Nathaniel stopped stirring the wheel and stared at me. 'You remind me of them.'

I narrowed my eyes at him before swatting his arm in a playful manner. 'Let me guess, people of my kind?' I raised an eyebrow and he nodded.

'We have similar problems. Slightly. '

'The seas help me to clear my head. Travelling from island to island is the most adventurous thing one could do, and it is fun apart from sea rivalry.'

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. 'There are sea rivalries?'

'Just like on the mainland, the sea is our home. It has rules and rule breakers. We have sane and insane humans. We have greedy pirates who desire other people's riches. It is our way of living.' He explained.

I grinned and he stared at me as if I were a mad human. 'What? 'I asked, sheepishly.

'For a lady, you have guts.'

'Tell me.' i demanded as I stared out at sea. 'These marks are rapidly intruding my arm and apparently, you know a thing or two.'

With a sharp intake of breath, Nathaniel took off his hat and placed it near a small crate next to him. 'I do not know much but my mother possessed that, Mark.' His mind wandered in the memory; I could tell. I do hope he will not be stuck in the trickery feeling of painful emotions. I need him open-minded and much more willing to tell. 'She did suffer a lot. It was etched on her leg, and she often cried about the pain.' He breathed out. I did not realize that he was holding his breath. It is a traumatic matter and I doubt he will go deeper into the details.

'I feel nothing pain. Sometimes I forget I have it and it been the most relieving thing ever.' I giggled lightly, still staring at the dark waters that are quite compelling despite their darkness. We have not paid heed to the storm, and I am afraid it is getting closer.
