Caroline's point of view

"Hello, wow, what a pleasant surprise," Talat said to Dad. They shook hands,, and I folded my arm across my chest with a knitted eyebrow.

How did they know each other?

"You must be wondering how I know him. I've known Talat for years. How did he even end up here?" Dad asked and Talat took the box from his arm. I could see the top had a blue bow on it. Obviously something for my birthday.

"Is that for me?" I asked walking towards him. He made an attempt to give me the box and our fingers brushed against each other. He was quick to act like nothing happened.
I realized that Pauline was talking to Dad about Talat's visit.

"Humm, excuse me? Vince? Where is the kitchen?"

Vince? He knows my dad enough to call him by his first name? People always add the 'Mr' to it.

"Caroline, love, show him the kitchen, and don't open the box," He said winking at me. I smiled and followed Talat to the kitchen.

He walked past, and his expensive perfume hit my nose. He smelled like Roses, fresh Roses.

I fan my nose as he walks ahead of me, his muscles shifting in his jacket. I checked him out the way he walked with style. He watched his steps and set the box on the counter.

Placing my hands on the box, I attempt to open the bow.

"No, Mr. Vince said you shouldn't open it," He said, slamming his hands down on mine.

"Mr Vince huh? I thought I heard you said 'Vince' earlier, or is it behind his back  you have respect?"

Wow, I didn't know I was that bold.

"I do have respect, always, Vince to his face and Mr Vince to his back. That's just the respect I have for him. By the way, you should get ready to go to the department with me."

"I —"

"No' I', no 'buts,' nothing extra, you are coming with me, that's final."

I pushed out my long neck at him, brushing the red hair from my face.

"Not you, too; you can't do that." I swallowed as anger rose in my chest. Him too? Another controller?

"Is everything okay in here?" Pauline asked.

"Of course, everything is okay, Vince. Caroline here is coming with me to the station," He said, and Dad walked in, removing a bottle of water from the fridge.

"Of course, Just take good care of her for me," He said.

Dad?! Is it that easy to give me away?

"She won't be living there, she will come back later," Pauline said, with a forced smile on her face, but only I Could see how fake it was. Fake like the plastic surgery she did on her nose.

Dad and he walked out around the back, and I was left with the devil's daughter.

"You are going to fuck up those files, then they won't want you there again, you got that?" She said looking at me, twisting her mouth.

"But, He is a detective, I can't just—" But I was interrupted.

"Damn right, he is, and you will stay away from him. Haven't I told you that you shouldn't have any friends? You should be all alone like your fucking dead mother, rotting away in her—"

I raised my hand and slapped her across her face; out of fury, heat spread its way up to my cheeks, spreading down my neck. Surprised, she held her cheek and staggered towards the refrigerator.
