Kogami's POV
"How did you do it?" Akane asked after listening to the recording for the third time. We were back at headquarters in Shion's office, discussing our next move with the others. According to Ginoza, nothing helpful had been found at the warehouse, so the only piece of evidence we had was the recording of my conversation with Mariko.I shrugged. "I think I just caught her off guard. Who knew these things would actually be good for something?" I added, holding up the pack of cigarettes in my hand. "So, what's the plan? Somehow I doubt Sybil wants to let her go so easily."
"You're right," Shion turned to me in her chair. "I sent the recording to the chief as soon as you got back. She wants us to keep an eye on her a little longer."
For the most part, I was disappointed. Mariko didn't deserve to be caught up in the maddening order that was the Sybil System. But I was also a little bit relieved. Mariko was a puzzle I couldn't solve, and more than anything I wanted to speak to her one more time. It was like there was something tying me to her, something that made me want to go back to the Sybil building to see her again.
Get it together, Kogami, I scolded myself. You only talked to her once, stop thinking like a lovesick puppy.
"Kogami? Kogami!" Ginoza put his hand on my shoulder, making me jump. "Did you hear me?" I shook my head sheepishly at my old friend and partner. He sighed disapprovingly. "Apparently, Chief Kasei thinks you would be better suited to keep an eye on her, considering you're the only person she's spoken to in three days. You're to stay with her 24/7 and give weekly reports to Saiga on her mental stability."
"Wait a minute," I interrupted him. "Why don't one of the facility workers keep an eye on her?"
"She won't be staying at the facility. Miss Otori will be working here, as an Enforcer." Inspector Shimotsuki answered, the disgust plain on her face.
"You really think she'll agree to that?" I questioned.
"She might, if you convince her," Yayoi told me. "The only other option is to stay in that hell of a building until Sybil clears her, and we all know how unlikely that is. If you ask me, it's really not much of a choice."
I nodded. "Alright then. Let's go get Mariko."
Mariko's POV
"Mariko Otori," a nurse called. I looked up to see her standing at my door. Next to her was Kogami, a wry smile on his face. "You have a visitor." Well, that was faster than I expected. It had only been a few hours since my interrogation, I had figured Sybil would take longer in figuring out what to do with me. I'll remember not to underestimate them again.Standing, I walked over to Kogami and bowed. "Mr. Kogami," I said as I straightened and smiled up at him. "I wasn't expecting to see you again so soon, though I can't say I'm not happy to see you."
"Can't say I didn't want to see you again," he returned the compliment with a grin. He motioned for me to follow him. "Come on," he ordered, "I'm getting you out of this place."

"Thank you for the compact," I thanked Kogami once more as we walked in to the restaurant."Anytime," he answered with a smile. "That dress suits you, by the way." I blushed, thankful for the low lighting, as I looked down at the dress I had chosen from the clothes compact Kogami had bought me. It was sleeveless with black lace over dark red tulle. My brown hair was half up and the rest cascaded down my back in ringlets. Around my neck was a simple black key necklace with a red gemstone in the middle and I wore matching teardrop earrings.
"Thank you," I repeated. The hostess welcomed us and showed us upstairs. I stumbled a bit in my heels, but Kogami placed a firm grip on my arm to keep me from falling. Once more, I thanked the low lighting as I blushed even harder. She led us to a secluded table next to wall that was completely made of glass so that we could watch the Japanese skyline as we dined.
