"Let's get ice cream," I suggested to Kogami as we drove back to headquarters.
He looked at me in disbelief. "You're kidding, right?" I shrugged and he chuckled. "It's thirty degrees outside!"
I laughed at his expression. "Ice cream is worth the risk."
Shinya shook his head. "Unbelievable." Eventually he gave in and we found a nearby ice cream shop along a line of stores. There was something familiar about the place, but I wasn't sure what it was. I ignored the feeling and skipped into the shop happily. Shinya chuckled at my excitement as he followed me.
I ordered chocolate-chip cookie dough with mint ice cream, which earned me a strange look from the ex-Enforcer. He ordered plain vanilla, ignoring the busty blonde who was doing everything she could to get his attention. I glared at her and resisted the urge to stick out my tongue as we left.
As soon as we were outside, I got goosebumps. I shivered, causing Kogami to look down at me with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, just cold." I reached into my purse for my clothes compact and cursed when I realized I had left it at home. I shivered once more and rubbed my arms. Suddenly, a large warmth settled over my shoulders. I looked up to see Kogami draping his coat over my shoulders. "What are you doing?" I exclaimed, feeling warmth creep up my face. "It's freezing out here!"
"I know," he answered with a smirk. "I imagine that's why you're shivering. I told you we shouldn't have gotten ice cream."
I glared at him but wrapped the coat tighter around myself. He chuckled and continued walking. As we walked, we talked about everything and nothing at once. We discussed literature and argued over which of the Bronte sisters was the best writer. We laughed and complained over how annoying Inspector Shimotsuki was.
While we talked, I caught myself watching him. I would stare at the line of his jaw or the twinkle of his eyes. Once or twice I would catch him staring at me as well and I would look away quickly, a blush on my face. Slowly, I realized that this was probably what a date would have been like back in the old days, before the Sybil System. I tightened my grip on Kogami's coat and allowed myself a sniff. It smelled like cigarettes and vanilla. I inhaled as deeply as I could without him noticing. I tried to memorize this scent, my new favorite smell.
Suddenly, I froze. Kogami stopped walking and looked at me. "Mariko? Mariko! Are you all right?" I could hear him growing frantic with concern, but I was unable to respond. With a shaking hand, I reached up and grabbed him for support. I wasn't looking at him, however. Instead, I was staring straight ahead of us.
He was standing on the sidewalk talking to someone. I doubted he had noticed me yet. He was turned sideways, so I could only see his profile, but it looked exactly the same. Short black hair, ice blue eyes, a serious expression. He wore a black dress shirt over a pair of dark jeans. Even now, his posture was perfect and he looked ready to make a business deal instead of buying a movie ticket. I was about to tell Kogami to turn around, get in the car, and drive away as fast as possible when he turned around.
Suddenly, Shinya grabbed my arm. "Mariko," he whispered in my ear. "What is it?" I jolted out of my daydream.
Keeping my eyes on him, I spoke to the ex-Enforcer, "Straight ahead. Black hair, blue eyes, and dark clothes." My voice shook as I continued. "He walking right toward us."
I heard Kogami curse under his breath. "Who is he?" I remained silent, a lump forming in my throat. "Mariko, who is he?" Shinya repeated tensely.
I breathed sharply as the man met my eyes. His expression was unreadable, but his pace was fast. "He's..." I trailed off unable to continue. Clearing my throat, I tried to speak once more. "His name is Rin Otori. He's my twin brother."
