Kahlil
"Kahlil. You haven't left the house in days—"
I wash dishes as I speak to Mom.
"Well at least I'm up early today. I'm going to school."
"It's Wednesday?"
"Yeah I skipped the last two days and you didn't even know. But I value my education so I should go. It's exam month I can't afford to slack."
"Kahlil, I'm worried about you."
"Why?"
"You stayed in your room for days no food no water and you come out acting like nothing happened."
I shrug. "It's life huh? And I ate when you were asleep. Do I still love Keisha? Yeah, of course I do. I'm I still pissed at the guys? Yeah, of course I am. What can I do about that? Nothing. So I digress." I wipe my hands dry and grab my bag.
I kiss Mom's cheek. "I'll be fine. Have a good day."
I get to school I feel eyes on me.
There they are. In front of my locker.
I approach it. They step out of my way. They try to speak. I don't reply. I grab my books. I get to class.
Just my luck she's the only other one in here.
She sits at her usual place in the back. I sit on the opposite side in the back.
"Hi Keisha." I say.
She refuses to look at me. Her hood has been up. Her head has been face down on the table.
"Please?"
She turns her head. She has no expression.
More students flood in.
Wayne tries to sit beside me. I stare him down. He lets go of the chair and makes his way to the front of class.
All three boys try. They all fail. There are three seats left. One beside me. One beside Wayne. And one beside Keisha.
And I know there are only two people not here yet.
Tamera gets in here and walks up to Keisha who simply stares at her.
Tamara tries taking a seat. Keisha turns the chair around and places her bag on it.
"Keisha you can't be serious."
"Try again next time."
Tamera walks away and sits next to Wayne. Keisha fixes the position of the chair.
The teacher walks in.
"This is a new set up. Nice to have you back Mr. Hayes how was your break?"
I stare at Mr. Wells silently.
"Okay then. I see everyone except... where's Tasha?"
"Right here." She walks in. She takes a look at the class.
I know Keisha wouldn't want to. So I loudly pull the chair back. Eyes everywhere look at me. I'm just looking at Tasha. She slowly walks up to me and sits down.
As the teacher begins class she turns to me. "Are you sure?"
I nod. She apologized for a month. I know she feels bad. She's left me alone. I'd rather sit with her than those guys.
Tasha doesn't try to talk to me during class but at one point the teacher asks us to compare our point of views on the morality of a situation.
She still doesn't try but this man will drop your grade for lack of participation. "I think he's morally correct, what about you?"
