Kahlil
I lead Callen and Miley to the pool.
"Go change. You need to warm up." I tell him.
"Kahlil I'm not swimming—"
"Yes you are. Go change. By the time you come out the water should be warm."
He walks and I turn to Miley.
"So you can't blame me for-"
I chuckle. "Go ahead Miley."
"WHAT IS YOUR PARENTS NET WORTH?"
I laugh harder.
"I think they've just been saving for it. We had a deal that if I got straight As since the first grade they'd get me a pool. I never imagined this, but they made it possible."
"Wait, but you said you were going into law."
I nod. "They still got it for me."
"I'm really sorry about my mom—"
I shake my head. "Yeah, she didn't do the best things, but I still appreciate her for being the one I could go to whenever I felt distant from my parents."
Callen walks out. "Nah. What my mom did was messed up. How are you not pissed?"
"I've grown a lot this past year. Mostly thanks to my girlfriend. I learned that not everything is in my control. That things have already been done and the only thing we can do is learn and be better. Now you better learn and get in the pool and start warming up."
My phone starts ringing. I turn off my ringer.
Then I hear a motorcycle rev outside.
I pick up my phone. I call, "Keisha. Just because I'm not in class doesn't mean you can come to my house—"
"I got worried. You wouldn't answer my texts. What if you were in trouble?"
"Come out back. I'm at the pool getting Callen warmed up."
A few minutes later my girlfriend walks in the place with her helmet still on. And she's in the jacket and gloves I got her.
"Damn you look good." I walk over to her.
She takes the helmet off and I let her kiss me.
"I know I look good. Now you left me to face the two who can't stay away from each other. Tamera and Wayne—"
Callen fell into the pool, practicing his entrance.
Keisha snickers. "We all know you are dating his sister. Calm down. Your bestie put it out there."
"You know I find it crazy how we are all connected without being connected." Callen replies.
"How?" I ask.
"How about I'm dating Essence. Her brother happens to be your best friend. He is dating her best friend. You are dating her. Her dad is your dad's sergeant but her bio dad went to school with your dad. And your dad knew her grandfather who knows Tyrel's grandfather, who knows her who gets her hair cut with Kodah's mom—"
"Okay I think I get it!" That was a lot for me.
Keisha hums, "Hmm, and it's weird how we met in the woods. Crazy how our paths have never crossed before that. And the thing is I've heard your dad's name in my house plenty of times."
"Why?"
She shrugs. "Dad's military business is none of mine."
"Probably because my dad doesn't get the benefits anymore-"
