Meredith's POV:

I wait patiently for Amy to get here and finally I hear a knock at the door. I go to open the door and Chloe is standing there with Amy, Paul, and a girl I don't know forming a semicircle around her to keep her safe and hidden. I smile and motion for them to come in. They move as a group and I swiftly close the door. As soon as the door is locked I have Chloe in my arms and am squeezing the life out of her. "I'm so glad to see you, my dear daughter." She hugs me back and we stay like that for a minute before Amy clears her throat. "Ummm, Chloe isn't supposed to be here. We need to get her passport and go." I look at her and nod. I go to the kitchen and pick up her passport. "You're leaving the continent, aren't you?" I turn around to face Chloe and she nods. "I really can't stay long, mom. I'm sorry. I've missed you so much though." She gives me another hug and starts crying. "Please be safe. I don't want you to get hurt or killed because of me." I hug her tighter and think about a way to reassure her. I finally come up with something. "Whitney knows how to use a gun, Chloe. There's no way he'd let anything happen to me." I feel her nod against my shoulder and pull away. "I'm actually here with Amy, Paul, and Jane because-" I interrupt her. "Wait! You made a new friend." She looks to Jane and then back at me. "I never introduced you guys?" I shake my head and walk over to Jane. "It's so nice to meet you, Jane. Call me Meredith." Jane smiles and looks to Chloe. Then she looks back at me. "I'm not human. I'm a jackal. I figured you should know. I won't hurt you though." I smile and blink rapidly. "A-A jackal? What's a jackal?" Jane thinks for a minute. "If Chloe is part cat then I'm part dog. We're friends though. I would never hurt her." I'm about to respond when Amy interrupts. "We should really go, Meredith. Chloe isn't safe here." I turn to face her. "Of course. Be safe." I look over to Chloe and she smiles. "I love you, mom." I walk over to her and give her one last hug. "I love you most of all." We both pull away and she leaves with her friends.

A couple of minutes after she leaves I hear the house phone ring and I pick it up without looking at the Caller ID. "Hello?" There's no sound at first and then I hear a voice. "Hi, Miss King! I need your daughter's cell phone number. She has one of my books and I want it back. It's my favorite book in the whole wide world." The girl's voice is cheerful and I smile as I get my phone out. "Do you have a pen and paper?" After a minute the girl speaks up. "Yeah! Go ahead!" I tell her Chloe's number and she thanks me before hanging up. I stare at the phone for a minute and hang up. I spend the day cleaning the house and doing laundry. I listen to Flyleaf and enjoy the feeling of working hard. Finally, I finish everything so I sit down on the couch and turn on my Apple TV. I go to HuluPlus and search for something to watch. A new episode of Reign pops up and I click on it. It's a tense episode and I can't stop watching it. "Surrender now and Mary will live." I lean forward as I wait for Francis's response, but it never comes because suddenly the TV turns off. "Hey! I was watching-" I stop talking as I turn and see an angry Alek. "You just put Chloe's life in danger." I jump up. "Alek, what's wrong? What did I do?" Alek tries to contain his anger for a second to respond. "I got a call from Valentina. You don't know her. There is a mai girl who wants Chloe dead. Val warned me that one of us might get a call from her. I just thought you would be more careful." I put my hand over my mouth and resist the urge to throw up. "Why did you not stop me?" Alek sighs and runs his hand through his hair. "I was too far away to reach you in time. I heard the whole thing though." I start to ask him how he heard me, but he must sense what I was thinking because he answers before I have the chance to speak. "Mai hearing. I need to go before I do something I'll regret." He swiftly leaves and I fall to my knees and start crying.
