Meet Luke And The Attack

Alek's POV:

Chloe frowns and I see her take a step towards me. I take a step away from her and immediately see the pain in her eyes. "Alek, what is wrong? Tell me now!" I look at my feet and start mumbling to myself. "...I need to protect her from Henry and demigods who blame Ariel for the ease with which The Order captures them." I suddenly feel hands on my cheeks. Chloe starts to stroke them and I feel her lips on my forehead. "Alek, come back to me. Don't let your thoughts take you away from reality." At the sound of her voice so close to my ear I look up at her and sigh. I owe her an explanation and she's going to get it. "After we broke our sacred vow...or bond...whatever it's called some humans formed The Order. Then it grew to hundreds of people and they figured they could target all demigods that wanted revenge against humans. We slowly lost any powers that aren't present in felines. The first rogue Mai was your ancestor, Ariel, and she never lost her powers." I hear a gasp and raise an eyebrow at her. "Could she be intimate with humans?" I start laughing my head off and I don't know how I manage to stop. "No. The prophecy states that only the Uniter can kiss humans. Clearly that's true because Brian was alive after he kissed you. I must say that I'm impressed you've paid attention to your lessons about The Order. I had a lot of time to think while we weren't talking and I realized you knew about the tests given to new members."

I watch Chloe as she processes what I just said and shakes her head. "So if everyone knew about the prophecy why not just intervene? Was the prophecy around when humans and Mai coexisted?" I'm astounded by my beauty as the words leave her lips. "How did I end up with such a brilliant beauty? The prophecy came into being when we broke our bond. Basset is stronger than us. If she wants something to happen there is nothing that can stop her. I don't know much more than what I've told you. I do know that Mai are like humans until they turn 16. Every Mai that turned 16 went through a test for the power of empathy by being put in a room with a killer. If they sensed how angry and violent the person was then they would be put under extreme protection. Of course that never happened because you were never tested. I just figured out by myself that the attack on Ukrainian Mai is when you were a little girl. Chloe, you have to leave America. The reason Mai and other demigods don't get along is that other demigods lost favor with humans, too. Humans thought that all demigods were bad because of our actions. That didn't make the others very happy. Then The Order captured Ariel and she betrayed the Mai. That helped the other divisions of The Order know how to trap their demigods. They learned to use the demigods' weaknesses against them. Ariel tried to save her sister and that made her a target for The Order. If anyone realizes you're a descendant they would target you! You're Mai and have Ariel's blood in you! They'd take all their anger out on you! Please, Chloe! Get out of America!"

I watch as Chloe sighs and looks at the stars. As I watch her I think of what the other demigods would do to her. My vision gets blurry as treacherous tears form in my eyes. Chloe finally looks at me and then zeros in on my eyes. "Alek..." My angel is silent for a moment and then her lips are on mine. I kiss back and wrap my arms around my angel's waist. As the kiss increases in passion my arms tighten around her waist. Chloe gasps for air and I quickly slip my tongue in her mouth. I feel like I've been electrocuted as I feel Chloe's tongue tangle with mine. I don't want to stop. I want to pick her up and carry her to my room. We break apart and rest our foreheads against each other. "I want you so bad, Chloe King. I'm so in love with you." Before Chloe can answer my phone rings and I groan. "Hello?" Jasmine's voice breaks the silence as she speaks in a rush that I can't make sense of. "Jasmine, ca-ca-calm..." Then I hear something that freezes my blood. "WHAT?!" I don't want her to repeat what she said, but she does. "THE GUY THAT I USED TO LIKE BEFORE I BECAME MAI KISSED ME! WE WERE BOTH IN THE ELEVATOR AND HE CONFRONTED ME FOR IGNORING HIM! I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TIME TO TALK BECAUSE HE KISSED ME! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?!" Suddenly I see Chloe run off in the corner of my eye and I curse. "Jasmine, Chloe just ran off. I don't know what's going on." We say our good-byes and I follow her.

As I run I see the orb again. I follow it to the penthouse and when I get there I look like I just ran through a downpour. I walk into the living room and see a boy slowly sitting up. Chloe and Jasmine are kneeling beside the couch I assume he was laying on. "What the heck just happened?" The girls laugh and Jasmine wipes the tears off her face. "Alek, this is Luke. Luke, this is Alek." I nod at Luke and he nods back to me. I look at my angel and she smiles at me. "Hi." I shake my head. "Don't you dare play off what just happened. What the heck did I miss?" Chloe's smile fades and I soften my tone. "Tell me later." She nods and I walk over to her and hug her. We stay like that for a few minutes until Jasmine clears her throat. Chloe looks at her and pulls away from me. I turn my attention to Luke. "Why did you kiss my cousin?" He looks startled by the question, but answers anyway. "I love her. She just randomly started to avoid me and finally I couldn't take it anymore. I saw her in the elevator and..." He pauses and waves his hand around. "Well, you know what happened after that. Wh-Wha-What are you guys? I know you're not human, but that's all I know." Jasmine sighs and puts her hand on his shoulder. "We're mai. Well, most of us are. Chloe, Alek, and I are mai. Kai, who isn't here right now, is a Jackal. Jackals are generally extremely dangerous, but Kai isn't. He's our dear friend." Luke looks confused so I cut in. "Jackals smell bad to mai so we know what he is. Mundanes smell perfectly fine." Luke nods and Chloe cuddles into my side. "I should get back to Amy. Will you come with me and guard me for the rest of the night?" I smile and nod. "Of course."

The next day, Kai come back to the penthouse. He brings a woman Jackal that wants peace between the demigods just as much as he does. Luke and Jasmine are inseparable now. The first time I saw them kiss without him dying I almost spit out my water like the cartoon characters do. Everything is great except I can't find my angel anywhere. I keep walking through the house and will the orb to appear, but it doesn't. Suddenly, I feel someone attack me and I'm so surprised that they knock me to the ground. "Give me your love and no one gets hurt." I laugh as I recognize Chloe's voice. "I thought I already gave you all my love. Please don't hurt me." There's a moment of silence and then I feel the tip of her claw graze my cheek. She's careful not to let it cut me. "Hmmm, I'll consider it if..." She trails off and I smile. "If what? If I make love to you?" For that I feel her claw against my cheek again. "Not until we're married, babe. I was gonna say if I get to make out with you." I feel her weight lighten and I turn over to I'm lying on my back. She sits back down on my stomach. "Don't you think the couch or even the bed would be a more comfortable spot for this?" I see Chloe's smile get bigger and she leans down to brush her lips against mine. Kai and the woman, Jane, choose that moment to walk in. "Oh! Ummm, maybe we should go." Kai starts to turn as he says this, but Jane turns him around. "What Kai meant to say is can one of you show us around the city. Jasmine is with Luke so..." I nod and Chloe quickly gets off of me. "I can show you around." Chloe goes into her bedroom and I follow her. "Hey! Will you be okay staying here by yourself? I don't want to-" Chloe shakes her head as I speak and interrupts me. "No! Go show them around. I don't mind." I smile and walk over to her before crushing my lips against hers. She wraps her arms around me and I stroke her cheeks. We break apart and I kiss her forehead. "I'll be back."

I spend about two hours with Jane and Kai just walking around San Francisco in the cool spring air. I'm surprised to find that I like their company. Jane is witty and smart. She's easy to talk to and we become fast friends. As we walk back to our building Jane walks up to me. "When did you move to San Francisco, Alek?" I look at Jane and try to think of the year. "I think I was like thirteen. I honestly don't remember. All I know is that I made the mistake of telling my adoptive parents when I started to transform. Valentina stepped in and adopted me." She nods and we keep walking. We laugh as we walk through the lobby of our building and up the stairs. I listen to Jane talking about her life in LA as I fiddle with my keys. I look up as we approach the penthouse and unlock the door. I frown as I sense a slow heartbeat speeding up. "NO! NO! NO!" I run inside and find Chloe on the living room floor. She slowly sits up and puts her hand to her head. I rush over to her and she looks up at me. "Chloe, what happened? Who killed you?" Her lip quivers as she tries to speak and finally I hear something that kills me inside. "I don't remember anything from the attack."
