Scar returned an hour and a half later. He opened the door, calling out a hello when his voice caught in his throat. Everything was packed. The whole house, which wasn’t much in their case, but it was still a shock to come home and find all of your stuff packed in a few bags. “Guys,” he called out carefully. “What is going on?”
Gloria managed to get downstairs carefully. The others were working on making sure they had everything. “Police. They came for a visit,” she said quietly, her voice filled with pain. She stumbled slightly.
Scar caught her. “Woah. Woah,” he commented, steadying her carefully and taking most of her weight. “One, you shouldn’t be up and moving. Two, again? Shit. We need to move. How long do we have?” He led her to a chair so she wouldn’t have to be on her feet. He knew the situation was fragile. Gloria was hurt and the police were snooping around, a lot.
“About half an hour. We started packing as soon as they left. We were only waiting for you. It’s time to go. Even if we don’t have a place to stay,” the red head said, trying to hold the pain out of her voice. Gloria took a deep breath. “We might have to stay on the streets for a night. But we can’t stay here.”
Scar bit his lip, thinking. So they couldn’t stay… But they had no where to go. He sat down on the arm of the chair that Gloria was sitting in. “I know. I’m trying to find the place. For now, I’m going to get the kids out of here. You stay here. Since the police have met you, it’s ok. I will get the others out and be right back,” he said after a moment.
Gloria nodded. “Ok. Be back quickly. And make sure you give Gray decent instructions. This can’t go wrong,” she said quietly. She put her head in her hands. “We have to get this right.”
Scar patted her hair gently. “It won’t. I won’t let it. I promise,” he said, not wanting her to cry. He was going to be strong and get them through this. He pressed his lips to her hair. “We’ll get through this and come out stronger than ever.” Standing up, he looked at her for a long moment.
She looked surprised. Scar wasn’t one she usually saw show that kind of emotion. “Thank you,” she said quietly, blinking back tears. She shook her head, clearing the potentially emotional thoughts from her head. “Go. You need to get them out of here and get their stuff too. You know we need it.”
Scar smiled at her. “I won’t. I know what we need. I will be back soon. I promise,” he said before turning and going to get his siblings. Picking up Dez, he hurried to round them all up. He made sure they had everything so they wouldn’t have to come back.
Gray grimaced at him as he grabbed a bag and Nath grabbed another.
A knock sounded.
“Shit!” Scar snapped angrily. The police had come back early. He looked around, hoping to find some way out. They couldn’t be caught. Not now. His eyes fell on the window. “Go! Now. I’ll pass Dez through to you.”
Nath went through first, landing carefully on the other side. “Come on! I’m going to be seen!” he snapped angrily, hiding his nervousness.
The police and Gloria could be heard talking as she let them in the house, careful to keep them away from her friends as well as she could. They were getting closer and closer as Gray went through the window. Dez was handed through right after before Scar could duck through. The voices of the police officers passed by them as they made their way out of sight.
Scar motioned for them to all be silent and hurried away from the house. He picked up Dez so they could move quickly. Once they were a safe distance from the house, he paused to make sure they weren’t being followed. He took a deep breath.
“Scar, where are we going to go?” Gray asked quietly, glancing around. The boy looked ready to break down. It was too much for a fourteen year old to handle.
Scar smiled and patted Gray’s head. “Don’t worry about it. We’re going to stay outside for a night or two while we make sure we have a good place to stay,” he said, gently. He looked at the two boys in front of him for a moment. “Come on. I think I remember a place Gloria and I stayed once. It will be big enough for the time being.”
They slowed their pace a little bit as Scar lead them to an old shed. He pushed opened the door, glancing around. “It’s clear,” he said, pushing the door open more and letting them all in. He pressed his lips together as he remembered how small it was.
Nath grimaced. “It’s so small though! We can’t all fit in here! And Gloria is hurt! What do you expect us to do? All curl up in a corner?” he snapped angrily.
“It will be a bit cramped but we can make do. It won’t be for long. I promise. Ok?” Scar said as he set Dez down. He smiled as they nodded, even if Nath seemed a bit reluctant to. “Thanks. You are the best. Now you guys stay here and make everything comfortable. I have to go help out Gloria with the police.”
