The Wendigo

It was three in the morning back at the cabin. Tori, Jameson and Ray were all fast asleep. Thomas was the only one awake of the four. He sat at the desk in his dark cabin room. The only thing slightly illuminating the room was a flickering candle flame at the desk he was sitting at.

He was reading the old book he had found the day prior. Next to the book was the photograph that the four of them all found yesterday. After reading the first five pages of the old book, Thomas thought to himself, "It appears as if each page following the first page is a summary of whatever creature is in the picture on each page. The first page was more of an introduction, but it was the only page that didn't talk about the picture of the unrecognizable creature attached. Come to think of it, all of these creatures are unrecognizable and seem made up. Hmmmm."

Thomas then flipped to the next page. The sixth page of the book. When he saw the photo of the creature in the book on this page, his heart had jumped. It was so much more clear than the previous five. Thomas didn't even need to look at the caption of what the creature was to know what it was. "The Wendigo."

As Thomas prepared himself to read the page, he felt the presence of someone behind him, making him turn around instantly. As his heart raced, he noticed Ranger Mike behind him. He was wearing a robe, slippers, and had a coffee mug in his hand. "Jeez kid, you look like you've seen a ghost. Again," said Mike smirking.

Sweating nervously, Thomas chuckled and replied, "You gotta stop sneaking up on me like that old man." Mike's eyebrow raised as he remarked, "Looks like this 'old man' caught you watching some hard-core porn vids. My man!" Thomas blushed while turning back around and said, "It's uh, not that. You see, I've found this book yesterday. It belonged to someone who was around way back when those kids supposedly vanished back in 1975. So I've just been looking into it. Some pretty creepy stuff has been going on around here."

Mike then let out a hardy laugh and replied, "C'mon kid. Don't tell me you actually believe that rumor junk!? Those are all just some made up stories to get buzz going. Guess I shouldn't complain because it makes me a profit. I can't even remember when I got this job. It's been that damn long. And let me tell ya, I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary all the years I've been working at this dump. If you're seeing stuff, it's probably because you hit your head really damn hard in that crash."

Thomas then looked down to the side and replied, "I don't know...." Suddenly, Mike snagged the book off Thomas's desk. "Hey?!", exclaimed Thomas. Leaving Thomas's room with the book, Mike said, "You'll thank me in the morning after getting half decent sleep. Tell ya what, I'll take you and the others to the local diner for breakfast tomorrow. It's on me. Night kid."

After Mike closed Thomas's door, Thomas heard Mike say to himself in the hallway, "Haunted book? Dead kids? Who'd get a load off this crap?! Ha ha!" Walking to his bed, Thomas thought to himself, "Maybe Mike's right. Rest is probably the most important thing I need right now." Upon lying down, Thomas was fast asleep.
