Passing the brush through her chestnut hair for the hundredth time, completing her nightly ritual, Rose placed the brush on her dresser and starred at her reflection.
Perfect yet broken.
The glittering sapphire necklace hanging around her neck was just a bitter reminder of the prison she was living in. She was in a bondage called marriage, and the necklace, like every luxurious gift he'd given her, were the chains that kept her bound to him.
Dillan, her husband, had just returned from his three months trip to the Bahamas, which meant the end of her relationship with Rush.
She sighed.
She regretted having married him. But she hadn't many choices at the time. It was either she'd married him, a rich heir or living the life of a bottom feeder.
At least you'd have been with the man you love.
True, she loved Rush but he couldn't give her the type of life she wanted. A life of wealth. And yet she couldn't let go of him even after having chosen his brother.
Was that selfish? Yes. Was she cruel? Probably.
But that's life. You take what you can and seize every opportunity you have to be happy else it'll vanish before your eyes and all you'll have left will be regrets.
But why do you have regrets now?
Her treacherous heart wouldn't stop yearning for Rush despite all her struggles to avoid him.
Well as far as she could try, considering they lived in the same house.
Oh, the perk of being in love with your husband's younger brother. She'd had her opportunity when Dillan travelled, to rekindle the passion they had shared. And like a moth is drawn to a flame, Rush was drawn to her and couldn't say no.
But now, with Dillan's return came the feeling of trepidation and the realisation of how wrong she was to choose wealth over his love. She still remembered the night they had before. His lingering kisses, featherlight touch...
Her resolve hardening and firm determination in her eyes, she decided it wasn't too late. She'd told him after dinner to meet her tomorrow by the lake. She intended to tell him the truth and leave with him to probably start life afresh.
Her hands dropped to cradle her flat tummy. A smile came to her face as she thought of the possibility that she might be... Could it be? Will Rush be excited?
Before she could ponder that, heavy footsteps out in the corridor piqued her curiosity.
She nearly jumped out of her skin when the door knob turned and Dillan walked in. He looked every bit a gentleman, dresses in a black Armani tuxedo. He was a handsome man and he took pride in that knowledge.
Closing the door shut and leaning against it, his obsidian eyes all but undressing her as he leered at her shamelessly.
She knew what he wanted, she'd seen the lust in his eyes when he'd presented her with the necklace at dinner. A price for her body. He treated her like a man would do his mistress. Buying her expensive gifts and ruthlessly claiming her body afterwards.
Like the snake he was, he crept quiet behind her, leaning down to whisper in her ear while his lust filled eyes starred at her reflection through the mirror.
"Did I tell you how beautiful you looked at dinner?" He rasped. The sound sending shivers up her spine and not in a pleasant way. "Got my mind churning with all the things I longer to do to you while I was away." He said huskily, placing his hands on her shoulders. He kneaded the tensed muscles but his touch only made her more tensed.
