Chapter 23

  "Hails wake up. It is christmas." Lucas is was jumping on the bed trying to wake Hailey up. She rolled over and my head felt like it was going to split open it hurt so bad. She groaned in pain and pulled the blanket back up over her head.

  "Are you okay hails?" Lucas asked me. She shook her head no and heard him running out of the room. Five minutes later she heard three different footsteps enter the room. The bed sagged beside her telling her that someone was sitting on down beside her.

  "Lucas tells me that you are not doing good this morning what's wrong baby?" Her mom asked.

  "My head it hurts so bad." She mumble into the pillow. She rolled over and look at her mom. She could see her expression change from caring to scared.

  "Oh my god Hailey your nose is bleeding. Lucas can you please go grab me a towel from the bathroom." Her mom said. Hailey put her hands to her nose and felt something wet on her hand. She pulled her hand back and she saw blood on her hand. Lucas ran back into the room and handed her the towel.

  "I am going to go call his doctor can you please stay in here with her Lucas." Her mom said. Lucas nodded at her and her mom left followed by Lucas' mom.

  Lucas laid beside her on the bed and he put her head on his chest. He kept holding the towel to her nose with one hand and wrapped his other arm around ger shoulders.

  "Okay your doctor said to take you in so that he can see what is going on. Lucas can you carry him to the car for me?" Hailey's mom asks Lucas. He picked her up off the bed. She felt a blanket get wrapped around her and Lucas moving towards the bedroom door.

  "Do you want me and Lucas to drive with you or wait here for you?" Hailey heard Lucas' mom ask her mom.

  "I think it will be best if you two did not come. I will call you once we get some news." Her mom said after she got in the car and buckled in.

  "Come in let's take you to the doctor and see what's going on." Her mom said.

  The whole ride to the doctor Hailey kept my eyes closed and she rested her head against the cold window. Every bump in the road made her headache worse. Everytime she would whimper from the pain her mom would grab her arm and apologize to her. Before she knew it they were at the doctor's office. Her mom had called ahead and told them they were coming so they were waiting for the two of them.

  "So I know that you said she woke up with a really bad headache and her nose was bleeding. Has she thrown up or anything else since we talked and you arrived?" The doctor asked her mom. She told him no and they took her inside. When she was put in her room all of the lights were off and there was no noise.

  "So I want to take her to go get an MRI so that we can check on the tumor on her brain. If it is not that then we will start running more tests to see what is wrong." The doctor told her mom.

  "On a scale from 1-10 how bas is your headache right now?" The doctor asked Hailey.

  "Right now it is a nine." She told him.

  "Okay I will have the nurse come in here and give you some medicine for the pain before we take you for your MRI." Hailey nodded and pulled her blanket back up over her eyes. She felt her mom squeeze her hand before the nurse came in. The whole time the nurse was putting the IV in her arm she was trying to get Hailey to talk to her.

  "Okay now that you have been given the pain meds I will be taking you for the MRIs." The nurse said as she started wheeling her out of the room.

  When they got into the room the nurse helped her onto the bed that moves into the machine. They put some ear buds in her ears and she went inside the machine. She has found that it is best to close her eyes while they are doing it. When it is done they take her back to her room and she sat in there with her mom.

  "How is your head?" Her mom asked me.

  "It still hurts pretty bad but it's not as bad as it was when I woke up." She tells her.

  "That is good. I have been talking to Jay and she told me that Lucas has not stopped pacing around our house because he is worried about you." Her mom told her. Hailey felt a small smile cross her face but she also felt bad because Lucas must be really worried.

  "Well tell her that I said to tell Lucas to stop worrying about me that I am fine." Hailey told her mother. She smiled at her.

  "Okay I will. Hopefully you can go home and we can enjoy our Christmas at home with Lucas and his mom."

  "Yeah I really just want to go home. I hate having to be here."

  "I know but until we know why you woke up with that really bad headache and that nose bleed you have to be here."

  "I know I do. Will you please lay with me like you used to last year when I was feeling really sick."

  "Yeah scoot over a little and I will. What song do you want me to sing to you."

  "No I don't want you to sing because my headache has gotten worse. I just want to lay with you."

  "Okay. Come here." She climbed into the bed right beside Hailey and laid down. Hailey rested her head in her mom's chest and she was listening to her heart beat while she was falling asleep. She woke up to hear her slightly humming a sing to herself.

  "What song are you humming?" Hailey asked her.

  "It's the song that I used to sing to you when you were in the hospital last year. I still sometimes hum it to myself when I am stressed out." She told her.

  "Yeah I always loved when you hummed that song to me because it would always calm me down when I was upset or when I was hurting." She laid her head back onto her chest and her mom started singing the song to her. They laid there for a while until the doctor knocked on the door and entered the room.

  "How are you feeling Hailey?" The doctor asked.

  "My head still hurts but not as bad anymore." She tell him still laying with her mom.

  "Okay it is good that it is getting better. So your MRIs have showed us that the tumor was still growing and that it has not gotten any better. I am afraid that there is no longer anything that we can do at this point. I am afraid at this point your cancer has become terminal." The doctor said. Hailey's heart dropped and she started crying into her mom's chest. She could not believe this.

  "That's not possible. I have been doing better. I have not had as many headaches and I have not been as sick. There has to be some kind on mistake." Hailey said desperatly trying to make this all go away. She hoped this was just some sort of sick joke that the doctor was playing on her but deep down she knew that the doctor was not joking..

  "I'm afraid there was no mistake. From what we can tell you have a month or two left. You are going to be able to go home and enjoy as much time with each other as you can right now. I will go get the discharge paperwork for you." With that the doctor left the room. Her mom wrapped her arms around Hailey and they both laid there crying until the doctor came back into the room.

  After the doctor came back in with the discharge paperwork Hailey's mom filled it out and they headed back to their house where Lucas and his mom were waiting. Hailey did not know how she was going to break the news to Lucas. She just told him that she was doing better and now she has to tell him that she had a month or two left to live because she was not able to beat it this time.
