Miragaia is a genus of stegosaur discovered in Portugal and named after the parish near where its remains were found. Its most distinguishing feature was its unusually long neck. Featuring up to seventeen vertebrae, Miragaia not only had more neck bones than other members of its family (Stegosaurus, by comparison, had twelve vertebrae), but also more than many members of the sauropod family. It is possible that Miragaia used its long neck to reach higher food than other stegosaurs, or as part of courtship display.
