CHAPTER VII
How I scavenged the City
I had just left from the tunnels of the station, finding the outside world, destroyed as usual. I held the axe in my hand tightly as I began my trek through the destroyed city. Using the map I had taken with me from the station, I used it as my navigator, to lead me towards the nearest military base, being in Pittsburg. The trek would take me at least a week, I knew it, but if there was any hope into finding any other human besides the ones I found at the station, this journey would soon be worth it. I began my journey walked through the destroyed city, finding it rather suspicious that no Protogen's were seen in site, despite this invasion starting nearly a month ago. These invaders should have built massive outposts by now, or so I saw in invasion movies, but I wasn't the invaders. As I walked through the empty streets, it was there that I saw a patrol squad coming down from the end of the road. I quickly ran off the road before any of the Protogen's could see me hide. As they left, I could see an abandoned building in the distance, appearing intact from where I was. I decided to investigate, hoping to find someone inside.
"Hello? Is anyone in here?" I shouted inside the building
"Piss off! This is my building!" Another voice replied, the sound of something rustling in the distance coming from the voice
"Who the hell are you?" I asked once I approached the voice, and it was there I saw a man, searching inside a box
"A human! And you?" The man asked me back as he continued rummaging through the box
"What's it look like? What are you doing here?" I asked the man
"Looting! Now leave!" The man shouted as he stood up and began searching inside a closet
"And you think you could hog all of this supplies? All to yourself? I'm about to journey across the state with scarce supplies! I deserve some of what you have in your hands!" I shouted to the man
"Go loot another store then!" The man shouted as he looked back at me
"Go someplace else? While there's good supplies here already? Never! Now give me some supplies!" I shouted
"I called dibs bub! Now fuck off!" The man shouted to me as he turned his attention back to looting
"Well you're about to see another thing coming bud" I said as I punched the man in the liver, causing him to fall to the ground, groaning in pain
Ow! Motherfucker!" The man shouted as he drew a pistol towards me "Get on the ground now!"
I quickly retaliated by swatting the gun away from his hands, but he quickly stood up and pulled out a small knife, pointing it at me
"Leave! Now!" He shouted once again, but I didn't listen as I kicked him on the leg, a hard kick, causing him to fall to the ground
"Gah! You with those fucking aliens?" The man asked me as he lay on the ground
"Listen pal, I don't even know much about these invaders, I'm just trying to get food is all. I got a long journey ahead of me. I told you that" I said to the man
"Go loot another store then!" The man shouted at me
I took a step back as I replied "And what will you do?"
"Feed you to one of them if you don't leave!" The man shouted as an answer
"And what about you? Where will you go from here?" I asked the man
"I have a base" The man replied
"What base? Where?" I asked the man once again
"Up your ass!" The man shouted as he stood up and continued looting
For a few seconds I stood there, thinking of what to do next. It was there that I grabbed the man by the neck and forced him to the wall
"Where is the base? Where is it!?" I shouted at the man
Soon after the man kicked me in the chest, and I threw a punch back at him as he began bleeding, and I forced him back to the wall. He then slashed at me, causing me to go backwards a few steps back.
"Why do you even want to come with me?" The man shouted in anger and confusion
"It's not you I want to come with. I just need to find some help" I responded to the man
"Then go find someone else!"
"First off, I never knew about this base until now. Second, I'm pretty sure you're the only person who knows the location of it. So where is the base?" I asked once again, taking a step forwards in the process.
"Up. Your. Ass!" The man shouted, and I took that opportunity to thrown another punch at the man, causing him to bleed even more
"Where is the base?" I kept asking this over and over, and the man still wouldn't respond
It was there that he had spit blood on my face, and gave his response "F-Fuck you" he stuttered as I wiped the blood of my face. I soon punched him in the stomach and asked the same question
"Where is the base? Last chance." I said to the man
"I-In the d-desert" The man slowly stuttered
'Where in the desert?" I kept asking
"S-South"
"South?" I asked the man
"South of here dumbass!" The man yelled as I slowly released him
"Now was that so hard to say?" I asked, mocking the man
As the man fell to the ground, I went over and picked up my bag and the axe from the station, taking some supplies and walking over to the door. As I was due to leave, the man had shouted at me to stop. I turned back to look at the fallen man, laying on the ground
"D-Don't go" The man had said, his voice sounding weak
"Why should I not?" I asked the man
"You...you won't survive. They'll kill you" The man responded, and I stood silent for a few seconds before responding
"A risk I am willing to take" I said as I left the man to die on the ground
