Saturday morning rolled around in silence.
My week had been hectic dealing with irritated partners and connections who had to change their schedules. Of course, they would never express any irritation to Mr. Sikeouti directly, so I ended up taking the brunt of their anger. I was determined to enjoy my weekend before the bitter man himself returned to the office Monday, and no doubt had something to say about my performance.
Pushing thoughts of work to the side, I decided that today I would visit the historical museum that was a major tourist attraction for the city. They had a new exhibit on Celtic history and culture and I was eager to spend my day exploring it and learning new information.
While getting ready, I caught my eyes in the mirror and studied my face. There was nothing significant about me; nothing that stood out. I was a classic plane Jane with brown hair that tended to frizz, brown eyes that no longer held much light, and pale skin despite my Hispanic heritage. I had very light freckles that fell across my nose and cheeks; but they weren't the pretty freckles that seemed to become a trend every now and then.
My nose was relatively small, and pointed up enough for my middle school nickname to be "piggy nose". I had thick eyebrows that didn't mirror each other. My hair was thick all around though which I loved and hated. I remembered how a high school crush broke my hopeful heart by calling me "a bear" and liked to point out the dark hair that covered my arms.
I cringed at the memory and averted my gaze.
Kids could be cruel to each other; adults could be worse.
I layered on clothes wearing a long sleeved black shirt, black sweatshirt, and my red coat that wouldn't zip; it was the only coat I owned. I wore a pair of black sweatpants and put on my chunky white tennis shoes that I adored. They were the most comfortable pair of shoes I had. I strived for comfort more than anything with my clothing. I grabbed a red scarf, pair of black gloves, and my purse before heading out the door. The museum was about a thirty minute walk from my place.
I barely smiled as the rising sun peaked through the skyscrapers and touched my face.
The streets were not yet crowded given that it was barely 8:00AM. I enjoyed my walk, taking more time than I usually do to get to the main downtown city area where the museum, among many other attractions, was located. It was 8:45AM by the time I arrived and I hummed as I entered a local café. I had fifteen minutes before the museum even opened up; my tired eyes could use a good dose of caffeine.
The barista was a charming middle-aged woman who cheerfully took my order for a small spiced latte. The cup kept my hands warm as I walked slowly through the museum twenty minutes later. I left my coat with the coat-check the museum provided and shoved my gloves and scarf into my purse.
The Celtic exhibit didn't open until noon and was on the third floor of the building.
I kept myself busy by making my way through each floor, starting in their basement, and reading everything that was available. I always loved museums, and could spend hours in them without getting bored. I visited this specific museum only one other time, and still found comfort in the exhibits I was familiar with.
I went to the second floor, my latte long gone, and was studying the suggested evolution of a specific shark species about two hours later. I figured by the time I had finished with this floor, the Celtic exhibit would be open to the public.
This floor was always interesting to me; it was oceanic based.
Basically it covered the history of aquatic life ,and even had some live exhibits where you could hold starfish and such. It was definitely one of the more fun exhibits which is probably why they never changed it; tourists enjoy petting stingrays and holding starfish.
