Derek was walking down the halls with a chart in his hand. he saw something in the corner of his eye when he stopped to see what it was.

I took his eyes off the chart and walked into one of the exam rooms. the room looked terrible, it looked like someone had trashed the place.

but his attention was drawn to woman on the floor unconscious. he tossed his chart down onto the floor and got on his knees.

he turned the woman over to see what was wrong with her, but the first thing he noticed was the woman's face, it was Meredith.

he checked her pulse and felt that it was there but it wasn't good. she was bleeding from multiple places, broken bones, and bruises in so many spots.

he paged multiple people before lifting her up and placing her on the exam bed.

he did everything he could before Richard kicked him out of the room. he was told he was too close was Meredith to be in the room with her.

he hardly knew her, he found it hard to believe he could be that close to her in such little time. but they did it anyways, they kicked him out of the room and now he's standing outside of the room that Meredith was in, being examined, people running in and out of the room, running tests on her  and more.

Richard wouldn't tell him what happened to Meredith, he wouldn't tell him what her injuries were, he wouldn't tell him anything.

but he also couldn't help but think about Meredith's daughter, Aurora. she was most likely still up in daycare, but someone was still going to have to break the news to her.

he stood outside the room and waited for someone familiar to come out of the room. it was almost an hour when Richard finally walked out of the room.

"How is she, how bad are her wounds, is she okay, is she awake, is she alive?" Derek asked as he walked next to Richard as they made their way down the hallway.

"Derek! calm it with the questions. Meredith is- she isn't in the best shape right now but she's going to be fine, she has many injuries, a few broken bones, she has some hearing loss at the moment we don't know if it's permanent but at the moment she's unconscious, her jaw his fractured. her jaw was clamped shut and he had to break it to unclamp it, her mouth is wired shut at the moment so she can't speak, she passed out due to the pain. there's not much you can do with her when she can't speak or hear, or is awake," Richard told him.

Derek couldn't believe what he was hearing, the last he saw of Meredith was she was on the floor and she couldn't move.

"I... what happened? how did this happen? it couldn't be a fall, a fall doesn't cause that much damage," he said.

"it was a patient," he answered with no context. he wanted to kill that patient for doing this to her.

"why the hell would a patient do that?" he asked enraged.

"he was having a seizure and everyone acts differently when having a seizure and that's how he reacted. was he in the room when you found her?"

"No, the room was empty other than Meredith when I walked in," he replied.

"they found him unconscious somewhere and when he woke up he couldn't remember anything from what happened, he didn't do it on purpose, he didn't even know what he was doing when he did it. he's not the victim here but he also isn't the villain here either,"

"I understand that he didn't know what he was going when he did it but a seizure isn't an excuse, she could be deaf for the rest of her life and just because some idiot has a seizure means she should be permanently damaged for the rest of her life?"

"Derek, you can't continue to be upset with this man, he didn't know what he was doing when it happened!"

"why are you the one defending him, he's not the one who got hurt in this! Meredith has a child, a five year old child, she's a single mother she can't afford to have this happened at work, that man could have killed her, what would happen to her child if he had killed her?" he raised his voice with tears starting to build in his eyes.

"then she would go to her father!" he said trying to match Derek's tone. he was also mad, of course he was mad. Meredith was like a daughter to him. he would always take Meredith into his office when Ellis had to go into a surgery.

he would talk to her about surgery and teach her the little things that wouldn't be too much for such a young child. he also bought a few colouring books and some crayons for her to keep her busy while Ellis was busy.

they had some good talks in those days, Meredith would even continue to visit him when she was in high school when she needed a quiet place to study or needed help with some homework.

"her father can't even get his life together let alone raise a young child," Derek groaned frustrated.

"you know Nathan?" Richard asked, a bit surprised.

"not well, but I've seen enough to know what kind of person he is and Meredith also told me a few things about him," he spoke.

"Meredith is going to be fine, she's strong, she's smart, she's always been smarter then the average since she was a child, that's why she's so good. she's going to be fine, she's not going to let this define her. she loves her daughter and she won't let her grow up with a hard life. Meredith is going to be fine, she's strong," he told Derek but mostly he was telling himself that as he parted ways, leaving Derek alone in his thoughts.
