Chapter 30
Gia weaved in and out of consciousness as her mind tried to dig itself out from the mountain of drugs she was on. Her eyelids felt as if they weighed a ton. It took every ounce of her strength to open them but even then she could only stay conscious just for a few seconds at a time. The last memory Gia had before waking up in the hospital was looking at Carla and the night sky out the window.
"What's that noise?" Gia had managed to ask.
"The jet, baby," Carla said, kissing her hand.
"We're flying?" Gia's voice dropped as she slipped back into unconsciousness.
The next time she woke up, Daisy was sitting beside her chewing on her thumbnail. Gia wanted to tell her it was a bad habit but her lips were so dry, she couldn't part them. Her brain was in a fog and it made her body feel funny. She wasn't even sure if she was laying down or sitting up. When she opened her eyes again and saw Luca, she frowned, or at least she thought that she did.
"What's wrong?" Luca asked, moving his chair closer. "Does it hurt? Are you in pain?"
"What was mom's favorite color?"
"What?" Luca asked in confusion.
"I don't think I know her favorite color," Gia said.
"She liked lavender," Luca smiled, placing his hand over Gia's. "She used to keep lavenders all over the house."
"Daisy likes lavender," Gia remembered. "Where is she?"
"She's at the new apartment," Luca said.
"Don't get mad," Gia licked her lips. "Daisy's having a baby."
Seeing his sister try to keep a serious face while high on medication made Luca chuckle, "Yes, I know."
"She's scared," Gia said. "I'm scared."
"Daisy's going to be just fine," Luca assured her.
"I don't think she knows anything about babies."
"She'll learn," Luca shrugged. "And you will be there to help her. Carla too."
"I hope it's a girl," Gia smiled. "Maybe I'll have a girl."
"You're not having a baby," Luca shook his head and muttered, "Thank god."
"Oh right," Gia giggled. "Carla made me swallow a pill...it tasted funny."
"I bet," Luca sighed. "How are you feeling right now?"
"Sleepy," Gia said. "I want to go home."
"In a few days," Luca promised. "We'll be out of here."
"Was I flying?"
"What do you mean?"
Gia frowned, "There was this loud noise....and Carla said it was the jet."
"Yes," Luca nodded.
"Are we Del Mare?"
"No," Luca laughed. "We're in Ohio."
"Ohio?" Gia tried to arch her brows. "Wow...I have never been to Ohio."
"I know," Luca said.
"Are you angry with me, Luca?"
"No," Luca shook his head and held Gia's hand between his. "Not at all."
"I think I got hit by a car," Gia said, watching her brother through her hazy eyes.
