"Mary?"
I shook my head, not even looking over my shoulder to see Steve scratch out another baby name in his notebook.
"I have an aunt named Mary and she's real stuck up," I explained "so, no to Mary." Steve nodded and flipped through the book. I chuckled under my breath at his face, wrinkled in concentration with the tip of his pencil tapping rhythmically.
"Jessica? Wait, no, there was a girl in Brooklyn named Jessica and she would trip me in the halls." I frowned and rested my head on Steve's shoulder, as if I could protect him from the bullies he faced over seventy years ago. He leaned over and kissed the top of my head, and I felt him smile into my hair as he did so.
"What about Sarah?" I suggested nonchalantly. Steve froze and I looked up nervously, worried that I had upset him by suggesting his mother's name. "Steve, we don't have to!" I exclaimed, sitting up straight "I just thought it might be nice..."
"Do you really want to?" He asked hoarsely, grabbing my waist to pull me back towards him.
"I mean, I may not have met your mom, but I think anyone who raises a man as smart and kind as you deserves to be honored in some way," I replied, my hands drifting up to hold his face. Steve cleared his throat and I shifted nervously, even more worried now that I had caused him to relive some sort of traumatic event in his mind.
"Sarah..." he whispered "we're going to have a little baby girl named Sarah." I smiled at him, both of us ignoring the tears that were silently trickling down our faces.
"Yeah, sweetheart," I said, trying to stop my voice from trembling "and we're going to love her for the rest of our lives."
"Damn straight we are," he said pulling me into a kiss.
"Language, Rogers."
5 years later
"Slow down Sweetheart! Dada's too old to be running that fast after you!" Steve glared at me as he darted by to scoop up our daughter.
"I'm not the one who got sprained their ankle climbing the stairs last week," he said pointedly before planting a kiss on my cheek. I gasped and smacked his chest.
"It was raining and the stairs were slippery!" I cried. He laughed as I grabbed Sarah from him and held her close to me.
"Sarah, you're not allowed to marry a boy," I said sternly "Learn from your mother's mistakes."
"Ok Mama!" She said happily, a big grin on her face. I shot a smug smile over to Steve who seemed resigned to my dramatics.
"Would you stop turning our daughter against men!" He pleaded. I nodded thoughtfully and turned back to Sarah.
"Sweetie, you can marry a man, but he can't resemble your father in anyway. No running into danger, or being named Steve. Got it?" Sarah just laughed at my antics, the kind of laugh that makes your heart warm and forget why you were even annoyed in the first place. Steve smiled fondly as he wrapped an arm around us.
"I love you Thalia," he said softly.
"I love you too Steve, no matter what."
