It was half past five when we began to eat our evening meal. Mother always knew how to cook the best dinner, even if food was rationed.

We were all sat around the table and it was lucky that it was a six-seater, although quite a small one. It was nice, though, to spend time with my family again and to have Allany feel welcome and comfortable after all that's happened recently. She definitely deserved a break from it all.

"So, what does your job involve, Allany?" Father asked. The question was sprung upon my friend, who seemed a bit taken aback.

"Erm..." She paused for as long a possible, trying to think of a cover-up, but not making it seem suspicious at the same time, yet I was sure that my family would believe her. Maybe it would have been easier if we had come up with something before arriving home. "Well, it's similar a secretary, I suppose. I like assuring people... And I also get to mathematical things related to finances."

"I'm sure that keeps you on your toes," Mother smiled. "Do you like mathematics, then?"

"Oh, yes. Absolutely. And science too."

"Now I can see why you and Kester get along so well."

"It's a factor," she said. "... I also must say that your cooking is most wonderful, Mrs Hughes."

"Oh, thank you, Allany," Mother smiled.

"I find myself thinking the same," I agreed.

"It's a shame Jack doesn't like gravy," interjected Father.

"Hey!" He cried. "It's not my fault I don't like it. My taste buds aren't tuned to that sort of... Stuff."

"Your taste buds aren't tuned to anything," Louisa retorted in a joking manner.

"You don't like broccoli. How can you not like broccoli?"

"Just eat your meals," Mother demanded. "If you want to argue, then you can do it after dinner."

The twins rolled there eyes and pulled their tongues out at each other when our parents weren't watching. Allany suppressed a laugh, but smiled anyway.

It was definitely different having her around. Especially with my family. Then again, I'm sure she was adjusting to the hectic life in the house. It was nice to see her laugh instead of showing  her work demeanour- firm, arrogant and critical.

I could tell that Allany's stay with us would be a fantastically new experience...

When we had finished eating, I looked to Allany, who appeared very content and relaxed. Her plate was clear except for a few carrots and peas that were separated from each other; not touching. This perplexed me a lot, yet I didn't question it because, in a sense, it was something typical of Allany.

I helped Mother in taking the dirty plates to the kitchen to help her with the washing up. Meanwhile, Father, Jack and Louisa had escorted my companion into the living room where they were quite interested in talking to her. What they intended on talking about was another matter and beyond me. They were always up to mischief.

"So, how exactly did you and Allany cross paths?" Mother asked.

"We, erm... Work together," I answered. There wasn't much to say because I hadn't thought of a decent or believable backstory, so I suppose that I would have to slip a bit of truth into the conversation.
