It had been a week since the incident with Denniston. I think Allany was still traumatised from it, but she was coping. As were the rest of us. The weather had picked up too; it was becoming frequently sunny and less rainy, which was always a welcome sight.
One morning, I was greeted by Allany when I was alone in Hut 8 reading a book. Everybody else had gone out into the village, so it seemed that Allany (in her personal belief) had caught me at the right time
"I need a favour," she said, rushed.
"What?"
"A huge favour. Possibly the biggest favour you'll ever take part in."
"Slow down," I instructed, then taking a deep breath. "What's the favour and why do you need it?"
She exhaled heavily, preparing to speak, but doubt glinted in her chocolate-brown eyes. "Are you sure you want to know?"
"Allany Turing, just tell me."
"Would you be okay in us pretending to be engaged?"
I blinked.
There was then a long, long silence. It seemed to have gone on for hours. I was stunned by what she'd said and never was I expecting those words to come out of her mouth. For a moment, I had no idea what to say- should I question her or give some sort of answer? But then again, I wasn't sure of my answer.
"That's a pretty big favour," I said at last. "And very sudden, I might add."
"I told you so."
"Why... Why are you wanting to do this? Because if I know you as well as I think I do, then there's definitely a method in the madness."
"And you're absolutely correct on that one," Allany remarked. "Before I tell you the reasons behind it all, you have to promise me that you won't tell anybody anything about it."
"I p-promise," I could barely get my words out, continuing to be in a state of bafflement.
"Say it properly."
"Just tell me, Allany!" I exclaimed impatiently.
She huffed and rolled her eyes. "Fine! Okay, so I figured that at some point my homosexual secret will come out. Now, if someone was to find out about it, my entire career and life will become non-existent. You're my saviour, Kester, and you can't stop now."
"Well, I'm honoured, but not entire sure what you're getting at."
"If we were to be engaged, then there would be no suspicion. See what I mean now?"
"Yeah, yeah I do," I answered with a small nod. "But one minute you're fretting selflessly over Christianna and the next you're worried about your own skin. What's gotten into you, Allany?"
"I slept on it," she said, pulling up a chair and sitting down opposite me. "I just need to keep my secret safe until the end of the war at least."
"I understand," I responded. "What about a ring? It's not going to look realistic otherwise, and I can't afford a proper engagement ring."
Allany held her hands up. "I've got it all covered," she reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a ring. It was silver with a small sapphire in the centre, sandwiched between two almost-minuscule diamonds. She slipped it onto her finger and looked at it in awe as it glinted in the sunlight.
