The four of us that were left watched Rose and Carlton get up to go for more drinks (she insisted that she helped out) before returning to our conversation. Although, Allany wanted to change the subject to something of the past, while she had the opportunity to do so.
"I'm not a spy," she said straightforwardly.
Anthony gazed at her, perplexed, as if she was talking nonsense.
Allany repeated herself. "I'm not a spy, I swear."
"Of course you're not a bloody spy," Hugh lowered his voice, so the rest of the people in the beer hut couldn't hear our conversation.
"What?" Allany seemed quite taken aback that Hugh actually agreed.
"Yeah. You're far too intelligent to be a spy," Anthony remarked, flabbergasting Allany even more. "There isn't a chance you're going to get brainwashed into all that nonsense."
"Anthony's right," I said. "You've proven that already."
"Denniston gave me the Beale Cypher," Hugh began to explain. "And guess what? I cracked it. 'Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and ye shall find.' Matthew 7:7. That was the key... Far too simple for the likes of you. Pity Denniston disagrees."
"It's fantastic that you've cracked it, Hugh," Allany said. "But you are right. Denniston will find any excuse to get rid of me."
"That's true," I added. "But now that the Beale Cypher has been cracked, that's the proof you need for your defence against the Commander. No way on Heaven and Earth could you possibly be working for the Germans. Or even the Soviets."
Hugh turned to Allany. "Kester knows what he's talking about. It doesn't even matter what Denniston thinks because we know; we have evidence," he then paused, switching topics. "But talking of you, Kester... Are you actually dating Rose?"
"Oh, Hugh. Please stop," Allany groaned exasperatedly.
"No, I'm not," I said persistently. "I hardly know her. Can you please let that go now?"
"Do you mind if I have a crack, then?"
"What?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"I do love a proper blonde," he didn't seem to be listening, but I couldn't help but admire his bravery. "So... Do you mind?"
"Well, I... I mean..." I was thankful when Rose and Carlton returned, placing full glasses of beer down on the table. It was like the phrase 'saved by the bell.'
As the pair sat down, Rose gazed to Allany, who was still sullen.
"Do you like stargazing?"
She looked up. "I'm sorry?"
"I said: do you like stargazing?" Rose repeated.
"Yes... Why?"
"Some of the girls I'm quite friendly with said something about a group of us joining up one night and going out to watch the stars. And I thought I'd ask if you would like to join us seeing as though I know that you do enjoy that sort of activity."
