Claire got up immediately to attend to the burn on her hand as I made Phoenix look at me "It's okay, sweetheart, you have mummy's fire powers. You're very special. Just do exactly what I do, okay, sweetheart?" I gave her a comforting smile.

She nodded as she sniffled and rubbed her eyes.

I started breathing in and out. It was a technique I discovered that worked very well with controlling my fire powers. Well, Connor helped me discover it anyway.

It took Phoenix a few minutes to understand what I was doing. But after explaining to her, she started to copy me.

We did that for twenty minutes, just to be sure she'd cool down.

"Claire, I need you to sacrifice your other hand." I joked.

Claire had returned whilst I was breathing with Phoenix. She had a wet cloth over her burnt hand.

She brought her free hand over to Phoenix's forehead like before and realised she had cooled down.

I sighed out of relief and gave Phoenix a kiss on her right cheek "You're such a brave girl." I said as I gave her a warm smile.

She smiled back and hugged me tightly.

"Why did you need me to check her temperature?" Claire asked.

"A disadvantage of having fire powers is being unable to feel warmer temperatures off of others and things. But it gives the advantage of being unable to burn from things like cooking. Connor told me supernaturals with water powers that used their power against me would be the only way I'd burn."

"I can tell Connor was invested." she giggled.

"Yeah," I smiled "I told him that he would be like my sidekick or medic. He was going to be that one person that would stick with me until the end."

Claire rubbed my shoulder as a tear rolled down my cheek.

"Unfortunately that couldn't happen," I continued "But he'll always be in my heart."

"That's beautiful." she replied.

I smiled in response as I sighed, sniffling a little. I then held Phoenix tighter to make sure she was okay.

"Awe you cwying, mummy?" she asked me, she must've heard me sniffle.

"I'm perfectly fine, sweetheart." I responded. Our heads pulled apart from each other as I then kissed her button nose.

She wriggled from my grasp as she started jumping around. Myself and Claire got up and followed along with her for fun. She started laughing as we did. Phoenix did get random bursts of energy but that may be normal for a child so we always went along with it.

It was the next day; three days from my birthday. It was a Sunday. I tend to leave Phoenix in bed for an extra hour due to Sunday news, and with the breaking news yesterday, I wanted to keep updated.

"Groups of volunteers have come together to find Fredrick Jones. The volunteers are aware that this could cost their lives as no one knows if Jones is a threat or not. If you want to join the volunteers, call 0800-696-6969 to join the team today."

The news continued on but I dialed that number immediately. I put my phone to my ear as someone picked up almost immediately "Hello?" I said into the phone as the person responded.

The conversation went on for an hour but I was finally accepted into the group of volunteers. The volunteers come together to split the prize money, that's if they're all still alive because I will be. But it's my new duty to make sure as many are alive by the end of it as possible. In the end, it's not about the money.

Claire walked in with a cup of tea as the news ended. I turned off the TV and told her about the volunteers group. She put her cup down and gave me a hug. She knows it'll finally give me a chance to kill him.

I've had no luck with finding a job so I don't need to worry about that.

"I do need to get going now though." I admitted as I stand and head for the stairs.

"Okay, hun." Claire replied as she sipped on her tea.

I walked into our room to find Phoenix still asleep in the corner of her room. We took the storage room. Phoenix still shares a room with me because she sometimes got nightmares and needed to sleep with me. It wasn't the case that time so it was nice to watch her sleep peacefully. I looked through my wardrobe we were able to buy last year. I grabbed a leather jumpsuit like outfit that covered all skin except my face; body, arms and hands, legs and feet, and neck. The suit was dark red with the fire colours along the the edges and sleeves of the suit.

I found it online and thought it would be perfect to wear when I finally got the chance to find the rapist.

I left the room and got dressed in Claire's room, that way I wouldn't wake Phoenix. It took a few minutes to get on but I sure did look like I meant business when I looked in a full length mirror. My red hair colour almost matched the shade of the red mostly seen on the suit. The suit has its own shoes attached so I didn't need to bother about footwear.

Other than my determined self, I was only bringing my phone as I was sent some sort of entry password. I'm not sure why I needed it but it seemed important. I slipped my phone in one of the tight leather pockets.

I made my way downstairs to find Claire just leaving the kitchen "Enjoy the tea?" I asked.

"Good as gold," she replied "Want anything to eat before you go?"

"I ate an hour ago." I replied.

"Alright, hun," she walked over to me and kissed my forehead, she was taller than me so it was fairly easy for her to do so "Just promise to be safe."

"I will be," I replied as I headed for the front door "One more thing; please wake Phoenix in around ten minutes." I said before smiling towards Claire and leaving the house, not hearing if she replied or not.

Lucky it was a Sunday so Claire didn't need to worry about work and Phoenix with school.
