"Well a supernatural that's done it with a human gives the child a fifty percent chance in having the supernatural's same powers, more of that or less." Claire said as she got comfortable on the sofa next to me whilst we both watched my troublemaker eat her sandwiches.
"Well if that's so, I'll have to watch out for any signs then teach her how to control it. The last thing we need is her burning down the school." I giggled.
Claire also giggled "True. Do you have any other powers other than fire and fire healing?" she asked.
"Just vampire like speed when I run, only when I run. But it's one I can control more than my fire powers so I'm not super fast all the time when running. Otherwise, I don't believe so."
"That's interesting." she replied.
"How?" I asked.
"Mummy," Phoenix waddled over to us with her plate full of bread crumbs "I fwinished!"
"Good girl." I smiled before kissing her button nose. I gently take the plate from her tiny hands and take it into the kitchen.
From the living room as I started washing the plate for Claire. As I did, I could hear Claire blowing raspberries and Phoenix laughing, almost screaming. Claire loves spending time with Phoenix, it's like she's actually family. And I wish she was blooded. But she's still my guardian and that's close enough for me.
I left the plate to dry on the side and dry my hands with a cloth as I walk back into the living room. I find Phoenix lying on the sofa, her white top lifted so her stomach was visible to Claire as she was blowing raspberries on her belly button. It was the sweetest and cutest sight.
It was one of Claire's favourite ways to make Phoenix laugh until she couldn't breathe. And I love just watching, letting them bond to grow stronger together. Besides, if Phoenix does end up having powers, she'll be more willing to keep Claire safe.
When Phoenix's favourite channel returned to the TV, she wriggled free from Claire's merciless raspberries and sat on the floor in the exact same spot.
"Back to before," Claire grabbed my attention "I think it's interesting because you have a variety of different powers. But none of your family have had powers and you were never experimented on."
"That's true," I replied "My parents used to always tell me how'd I'd be their perfect child. When I discovered my powers, I knew they'd be afraid of me. They'd tell me how supernatural beings had mercilessly killed my older family members. So I did follow it by killing my parents but it was well deserved. That's probably why they were so eager to kill Connor; because they figured out I had powers but tried to hide their fear. But they messed with the wrong person."
Claire just smiled "At least you got that redemption for Connor."
"Connor wasn't just going to die in vain. It wasn't his decided fate so I did exactly what he would've wanted; killed my parents for his name."
"You're very brave for that."
"Thanks, Claire. It was just as brave when you chose to take me in and-"
"And when I officially adopted you for your seventeenth birthday?" she interrupted, knowing exactly what I was going to say.
"Yeah." I giggled.
"Well I adopted you because you were struggling with pain and you needed a chance at life than to just survive on the streets. And especially in that state you were left in." she sighed.
"I haven't called you my mum yet because it just feels wrong, knowing my actual mum killed my best friend." I admitted.
"I understand," she said "Just know I never expected you to call me your mum, I just wanted to adopt you to know you can still be loved by a guardian." she smiled as she wrapped her arm around me.
I lean my head against her shoulder as I sighed contentedly and watched Phoenix staring at the screen.
"I also never asked," Claire broke the second silence "How did you survive on the streets?" she asked.
I pulled away from her warming comfort as I cracked my fingers. She grabbed my hands immediately and rubbed them with her thumbs. I took a deep breath "I stole a lot, using my speed to get in and out of places to steal things that I required to survive. But I never stopped moving either due to that. Many people believed I was a vampire trying to cause trouble so I could lure someone in but it wasn't the case at all. There were times where I had to kill people, especially guys, because they'd try to say things like 'If you let me have sex with you, I'll give you a place to live.' I never believed it, I just killed them off immediately. One time I was almost raped as he caught me off guard but I knew how to defend myself and he was killed in a matter of seconds. But," I paused "I have no idea how I survived those six years, I just did." a small smile appeared on my face.
"So that's why you were always tired, you never slept. You wouldn't sit still either but that was because you were cautious of anyone that would try and have sex with you. It all makes sense now."
I just nodded at her response as I pulled myself back to her warming embrace.
Those six years weren't easy ones to live out but I'm glad I did, it was so worth it; having a beautiful daughter and a mother figure to take care of us both. I couldn't thank her enough for legally adopting me for my seventeenth birthday. Other than the early gift of Phoenix being born, it was the best gift I was ever given; looking at the adoption papers. I was straight to tears when I realised what they were. Those two memories I'll never forget.
"Mummy!" my thoughts were broken when I looked over at Phoenix who looked upset, she was close to tears.
I quickly rushed to her and picked her up "What's wrong, sweetheart?"
"I feewl hot." tears were escaping her baby like eyes.
I took her over to the sofa and sat with her in my arms "Claire, can you put your hand against her forehead?" I asked.
She did as I asked. She pulled her hand away immediately as burns appeared on her skin. Just as I expected as soon as she said she was hot; she has fire powers.
