"Hey, Rue! Could you take me down to the lake? I want to got for a swim!" Edward asked, running up to me with a huge smile plastered on his face. He loves to swim.
"No, Eddie. Mom said no, and you know what happens when you disobey mom." I tell Edward trying not to give in to my little brother.
"Please!" Edward asked me while dragging the word on.
"Fine, but only for a couple of minutes." I tell him, giving in to his little face.
Edward cheers joyfully and takes off his shirt and pants, revealing his swimming trunks under his clothes. I walk down with him to the lake and set up a towel on the dock sitting on it and helping Ed into the water.
"Let's see your free style, sugar!" I exclaimed while he swam off.
He starts to freestyle, and I laugh. I love watching Ed doing things he loves. I think that when he grows up, he will be a professional swimmer. He will grow up and be successful. My little brother.
I look up at the trees with green and yellow leaves falling onto the water, making little repels in the water. While I stare at that, I see bigger repels in the water. I look over and see my little brother, Edward Blood, struggling to keep his head above the water.
"EDWARD! EDWARD!" I scream across the lake. My voice cracky as I take off my shoes. When I take them off, I jump into the lake, swim to him, and I no longer see him. I start to go into panic mode. Then I see his head bobbing in the water.
I finally make it to him and grab his weak body. I start to swim back with him close to me. When I finally reached the sandy ground, I checked his pulse. It's no longer there.
My heart drops, and I try to give him CPR, but after a couple of minutes, he doesn't wake up, and my heart breaks.
"FUCK! NO! OH GOD, NO! PLEASE NO! PLEASE NO! NO! MY BOY! OH, MY BOY!" I scream in pain. While sobs leave my mouth.
Next thing you know, there is my mother. Standing above me. Looking down at her son's dead limp body in my arms.
"What have you done?" My mother says in a cold and distant voice, as if she doesn't care about her youngest son.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?" She screams, and her voice cracks.
I wake in a panic from a nightmare. Sweat dripped down my forehead and back. Tears streamed from my face.
After I compose myself, so I don't wake anyone up. I get up and remember that I have to meet Robin. I look at the clock, and it is 11. I sigh in relief and get ready. I walk to the bathroom and brush my hair. As I finish up, I see Racetrack walk out of a toilet stall. He looks at me, and I look back.
"Um, were you going this late at night?" Race whispers scratched the bad of his head.
"I am going to visit my brother in Brooklyn, considering that Jake would let me go earlier..... I am going now, so he wouldn't know I'm gone. Hey can you keep this a secret? Dont want Jake knowing about this." I ask Race politely so that he will say yes.
"Sure, just be careful." Race says with a worried look plastered on his face.
"I will, I promise. I will probably be home around 2-3. And anyway my brother will protect me." I reassured Race with a small smile.
He nods and kisses me on the cheek, saying goodnight. Then I put away my brush and tip-toe out of the lodging house to not wake anyone up. I finally get out with no one spotting me. I open the door and walk out into the cold fall night. The cold winter wind hits my face, making my nose and cheeks rosy.
I hold my arms close to my chest to keep the warmth while walking to the Bridge.
I see all ages on the streets with no blankets or beds. I feel bad for them. I know I am poor, but I am not on the streets. And anyway I have saved up money. I am not using it for housing or anything on me and instead saving it for unique things for the holidays. I have never been a big birthday person, but when it comes to Christmas and the other holidays, I go all out.
These are the things I think about when I finally get to the Bridge. It is dark, and fog hangs low on the river. It would be a perfect picture moment. These are the moments that I keep in my head to go back to when I am sad or lonely or feeling down. These are the moments that I know there is beauty in the world, and you have to find it.
It is now 11:45, and I am waiting at the Brooklyn entry of the Bridge when I hear strange noises. It sounds like someone walking on wood. I turn my head to see where the sound comes from and see a shadow figure. It looks like a newsie, judging by the hat and the way he walks. Holds himself high, not caring what people think of him.
"Is that you, Robin?" I question.
"So yous knows Robin, ahe. Well, I am not him, but I am his "Boss." The mystery man tells me.
His "Boss," I think to myself. I thought he was a newsie. Does this guy me the Jake to Manhatten newsies?
"Boss? Ronny never told me about having a "Boss." I say, surprised because Robin didn't tell me about this. We tell each other about everything.
"Oh, so you are good friends with him. Whats yous name?" The man said.
"Rue. Where is Robin he was supposed to be meeting me here." I state skeptically.
"He's sick. Can't get out of bed. It's gonna go away in a few days, but he can get out of bed. Doc order. Also, I kinda am his boss. He's my second in command. I's the King of Brooklyn Princess." The King of Brooklyn told me, and it finally clicked for me that this was Spot Conlon. The guy Robin was telling me about for so long. He always said that Spot was cocky, but I never expected him to be this cocky. Never thought it was possible for a person to be that cocky.
"Your Spot, aren't you?" I asked, scared because of all the negative things I'd heard about him.
"Yes, I am." Spot says, and my heart skips a beat when he walks out of the fog. He is so pretty, I think to myself. And then he walks over to me.
"Let's get you to the lodging house instead of out side in the cold. For hell's sake, yous going to get sick just like yous, brother." Spot tells me before grabbing my arm and guiding me gently to the lodge. I go along with it.
