The Match Talk

Me, Davey, Jake, and Les walk through the crowded streets stealing our papes. We sold about 150, give or take together, but we still have more. I have been teaching Les how to sell papes, and Jake is teaching Davey. Jake and I decided that it was best if they had 2 teachers. I am good with kids, so I am with Les.

"Extra, extra..." I hear Jake and Davey trying to sell their papes on the other side of the boxing match while Les and I work as a young child and teen girl duo. It is one of the best. They feel bad about a girl and a kid being on the streets and trying to pay for things by being a newsie. That and they don't want a girl to be selling papes.

"So you take one pape and go up to someone and sniff and cough. You should say that it is your last pape and you are sure to sell it!" I teach Les how to sell papes as a kid. I had to when I was younger, so I have pointers. When my siblings and I ran away from our home, our parents, and our lives. We had to sell all kinds of things, including papes, where I became a newsie.

Most of my siblings still live in New York, but two left me. My sister, Charlott, and one of my brothers, Duck, left 2 months ago. I feel alone, but I know I have other brothers in the Burroughs. One lives in Queens, another in The Bronx, Brooklyn, and a lot in Manhattan. I see the Manhatten one very often, but the others not so much. I always try to visit them, made I will do it today after selling papes.

As I was thinking this, Les came back smelling like beer, but it looked like he sold his papes.

"Hey look what I got! A quarter!" Les says with a huge smile on his face.

"How did you get that? And why do you smell like beer?!" I asked

"Well this guy dared me to take a sip of beer and I did." Les stated with the brightest smile on his face.

"Okay kid but don't do that again. We don't want da bulls to get ya. Okay kido?" I asked him.

"Okay Birdie." Les responds with a cute voice.

He did remind me of my little brother, Edward. He was about the age of Les.

"Hey, how bout you sell this pape and go find your brother? I think were done for the day. I will see you tomorrow Hon." I tell Les while handing him a pape to sell. I was going to visit my brother in Brooklyn.

Les nodded, taking my pape to sell as I headed off, but before I could walk away from the match, Jake grabbed my arm.

"Were you going, Birdie?" Jake asked worriedly because he knew I wouldn't walk off on a selling day when I still had papes.

"I am going to visit Robin in Brooklyn." I tell him

"Who? Where?" Jake asked with a puzzled look on his face.

"My brother Robin in Brooklyn." I tell him because he hasn't heard of Robin.

"Yous can't go to Brooklyn by your self! It dangerous." Jake says, turning his big brother mode on.

"It isn't that dangerous. And plus, it's not like I haven't been there before. I go there all the time to visit Robin." I started that Jake would let me go.

"No, it's getting dark outside. Maybe I can go with you tomorrow when it is still light outside so I can keep you safe. I don't want anything to be happening to my friend. Also I want to meet this brother of yours." Jake says while rapping an arm around my shoulders with a smile.

"Ug, fine, but let me just tell you that you are being a real bitch." I tell him making sure that Les isn't around to hear me.

"I know, I know, but this is to keep you safe. Like I said Brooklyn is dangerous. Hey promise me that you wouldn't go alone" Jake says romving his arm from my shoulder and skweasing my shoulder tight.

"First I don't belive that, second I make no promises." I say so that he wouldn't hold it against me if I go alone.

"Thats not good enough Rue. I mean it don't go alone-" Jake tries to finish his sentence but before he can I put my papes in his empty hand and run away, waving goodbye.

"I am going to the lodginig house, so I can get some rest." I say turning around and running.

"Hey, this isn't over." Jake yells but I could barely hear it from the wind in my ears and the pounding of my feet on the concert road.

I turn the corner and bump into someone.

"Oh My God, I am so sorry. I didn't mean to bump into you. I was running and turning the corner and didn't see you. I am really really sor-" I apologized to the man and try to finish my sentence but he cuts me off.

"Its really okay. I am fine." The man said trying to tell me that it was fine

"Hey what is your name? Giving that you almost gave me a bloody nose." He asked with a little smile.

"Its Rooster Blood, but you can call me Rue or Birdie. Whats yours?"  I asked him with a smile growing on my face.

"Its Dean, Dean Pulitzer. Nice to meet you Ms. Blood." Dean responds and takes my hand to shake.

"Pulitzer? You mean as Joseph Pulitzer? The man that is literally in charge of all Manhatten?" I asked, nervous but also excited.

"Well I am the nephew of that horad man." Dean says with a smile on his face.

My shocked face makes him laugh

"Oh that is funny. Yes I did call him horad." Dean tells me with the biggest smile on his face.

"Well I better be going but it was nice to meet you Mr. Pulitzer. Maybe we will see each other again, but for now tell Joseph Pulitzer to make better headlines or I will have to keep making things up to sell." I say with a little laugh and walk away.

"See you later Ms. Blood, I cant wait to see you again." Dean yells from down the block waving and I wave back.

The lodging house wasn't that far away, and the walk was very quite thinking about how to spend my money on. I was thinking about buying some ingreadents to make pasterys for the boys. All we have had to eat is bread and wine from the cart with nunes.

I walk up the stairs to the bedroom and there was no one there so I went to sleep think of going to Brooklyn at midnight to meet up with Robin.

I diside to write to him. I grab some of Racetracks paper and a pen from Crutchies side desk.

Dear Ronny,

I hope that you get this today. I will be coming to Brooklyn tonight at midnight.

I will be sending someone to deliver this. Meet me on the Bridge at 12. I will probably be early.

                       Much Love,

                                            Rooster Blood

I walk down to ask Mr. K to deliver this letter, and he walks out with my letter. I then go up to my bed and tuck myself in. Then I fall asleep. I always have dreams, but not all are good.
