I wake up to hearing yelling. Great I think to myself. I roll over and hide in the blankets. Thinking of the gorgeous ice-blue eyes. The tight grip on my arm as the owner guided me to the lodging house.
"Hey, goirl! Get up! We got work to do!" I hear a voice say, and then I feel a slight kick in my back.
"Hey, don't kick me. I'm get up. I am!" I turn around and see Blink standing above me.
"Let's go! Now!" Blink yells at me. I got up and walked out of the lodging house with Blink. I was already dressed.
The gate was already open so we strolled in and went up the ramp. Walking to Mr. Weasle with money out to buy the papes.
"I'll take 100." I tell Mr. Weasel will handing his my money.
"Oh no, it's 10 cents for 100 now. Mr. Josephe Pulitzer's orders." Mr. Weasle, with a smug smile on his face, watch my mouth hit the floor.
"What do you mean 10 cents for 100? You can't do that!" I yell at him, but it's no use.
"If you aren't going to buy, leave the line." He told me, and I walked frustrated to the steps and sat on them, followed by all the other newsies.
After a little while, Jack finally showed up.
"They jacked up the price! Did you hear that, Jake! 10 cents a hundred! You know what. It's bad enough that we gotta eat what we don't sell! Now they jacked up the price. Can you believe that?" Blink shouts in anger while one of the Delancey brothers imitates him.
"This will bust me. I'm barely making a living right now." Someone says from the crowd of boys gathered around us.
"I'll be back sleeping on the streets." Boots commented.
"It don't make no sense. I mean, all the money Pulitzer's making. Why would he gouge us?" Mush asked everyone.
"Because he's a tightwad, that's why." Racetrack answers the question, and everyone agrees except for Jack. He walks over to the counter and slabs his hands on it.
"So why the jack-up, Weasle?" Jack asked, frustrated.
"Why not?" Mr. Weasle says while sticking a finger in his mouth and holding it up to the sky. "Its a nice day. Why don't you ask Mr. Pulitzer." He smiles while he says that, and it gets us all mad.
"They cant do this to me, Jack." Blink tells Jack.
"They can do whatever they want. Its their stinking paper." Race tells Blink in a moppy voice.
"It ain't fair. We go no rights at all." Boots told Jack.
"Come on, its a rigged deck. They got all the marbles, okay?" Racetrack says and somehow I knew that sooner or later he would bring cards into this.
"Jack, we got no choice. Let's get our lousy papes while they still got some." Mush says about to walk off.
"No, nobody's going anywhere." Jack said while holding mush back.
"We gotta eat, Jack." Mush told Jack, but it was no use he was set.
Then everyone started to argue.
"Clear out, clear out. Give him some room. Give him some room. Let him think." Les said while pushing people out of his way to sit next to Jack and me. I laugh to myself. Les is quite the comiden.
Blink offers him a ciggeret and Jack takes a puff while everyone one is starting at him waiting for him to say something.
"Jack, you done thinkin yet?" Race asked the question everyone else wanted to asked.
