Author's Note: I have been inspired lately by the music artist Joji, the song lyrics in this chapter are from the song 'Dissolve' from his latest album. Check it out, if you want the feels. Also, comments are appreciated!
Waking up the next morning due to sunlight streaming through a loose beam of the shack, you realized the compromising position you were in. MacCready had his arm under your head still, while his other arm was wrapped around your torso, pulling your body to spoon flush against his.
He was still asleep and radiating so much heat, that you felt slightly sweaty where your body was pressing up against him. You couldn't deny that you had been craving this feeling of safety again, since the first time you'd almost died in the wasteland.
There are worst people to be cuddling with... You grinned to yourself and tried to ignore your heated cheeks. ...and he appears to be the cuddly type, after all.
You laid like that for a while, simply enjoying this rare pleasure. A part of you kind of hoped that maybe he would start doing this all of the time. As soon as you had the thought, you scolded yourself for it.
Why would he just start cuddling you at night? It's not like he's your lover. It's unlikely that he has any other feelings besides friendship towards you anyways..
He begun to stir now, his eyelashes fluttering as he mouthed a few words that you couldn't make out. You didn't want him to wake to find you two tangled up in each other, so you quickly moved his arm and got up suddenly.
This fully woke him, stretching then yawning before looking over in your direction. You had busied yourself with looting Winlock's supply crate and packing up anything you had gotten out the night before.
You refused to look at him, but could feel his stare bore into you from behind. He was waiting for you to finally look at him, when he realized you weren't he hummed in thought, getting up.
You went outside first, so that you could disarm and snatch your bottlecap mine, and replace the fusion cores from last night. You both then quickly looted the gunners many ammo boxes and anything else of value before heading out for Diamond City.
----
'Pop!' My combat rifle sent a bullet flying through a ghoul, on the outskirts of the city. MacCready had managed to keep up despite his slight hobble from his injured leg, and it was already looking significantly better than yesterday.
In between shooting bloatflies and ghouls, we were cracking jokes back and forth. Mostly just making fun of gunners and how they said the dumbest shit, trying to sound tough.
You were feeling melancholy today but was trying to not let it get progressively worse. The reason being, MacCready seemed to be in a particularly cheerful mood and you'd hate to sour that.
The entire way back, you would look over to see him grinning to himself. You could see his whole demeanor had changed, as if a huge weight had been lifted. He didn't even complain about helping with carrying the loot, like he usually did.
Seeing him actually expressing happiness really touched your heart. You could feel that it had been a long time, since he had felt this hopeful.
You just wish you could stop thinking about Nate, and about how much you wished he was here to help you find Shaun. You knew that irritability was a side effect of the Jet, but your mind often found it's way to these places anyways.
----
Arriving at Diamond City at last, you headed straight for the Mega Surgery Center and had MacCready properly patched up and examined. He was given some stiches and Med-X, to help with the healing and after 200 caps, was sent on his way.
