It was a long, painful journey back home to Sanctuary the next day. Despite the brief reprieve at Hangman's Alley, both of your bodies had still not recovered from the extensive injuries they'd sustained.
The recent fight against the Courser, had definitely put us in the worst shape I have seen so far. We journeyed back to County Crossing first, to retrieve the damaged power armor sets, then proceeded towards Sanctuary.
The time passed by slowly, as it was excruciating, which is probably why we stayed highly medicated and distracted ourselves with jokes and stories the entire time we walked.
Once we finally arrived back at Sanctuary we filled Sturges and Preston in on all that had occurred, since it had been a while since we've seen them and a lot has happened.
Preston informed us that the raider gang we were worried about attacking, did so while we were away, but that they were stopped quickly. He mentioned that it was all due to the new guard tower, which allowed them to spot the incoming surprise attack, ruining their potential advantage.
He proceeded to tell you that some of the nearby settlements have reported needing some additional help with things like; more beds, better defense, food and water. All due to their recent population increases since we've been away.
I told Preston that I would look into it as soon as possible, but that first we needed to rest and let our injuries heal. He nodded, as we left the main yellow house and headed towards mine for the night.
----
The following couple of days were spent going around to the settlements and assisting them with the basic necessities. After providing them with more beds and the like, you could visibly see their happiness increase.
This always made you feel good, helping the less fortunate settlers and representing the Minutemen's comeback. However, you were eager to continue your next step in finding Shaun.
You now had a Courser chip, but it was heavily encrypted, as a security feature of the Institute. It was far beyond what you could deal with, despite your technological savviness.
While you were last in Goodneighbor, you had stopped by Doctor Amari's office to see if she could point you in the right direction to get it decrypted.
She said that she would be unable to assist herself, but that she knew of a group of people with the means and familiarity with this specific tech.. The Railroad.
You'd never heard of them before, but Doctor Amari had told you that their purpose was to liberate synths who wanted freedom from the Institute. Synths were apparently treated as slaves since they were created for the sole purpose of serving the Institute.
After thanking her, you and MacCready had left to begin locating the courser and retrieve it's chip. The entire way, you had kept your eyes peeled for any secret symbols that might give you any clues about where The Railroad was, or how to locate them, but to no avail.
It was now the third day after arriving back home with the chip and you kept finding yourself pondering about how in the world you were going to find the secretive Railroad. It was starting to drive you crazy.
You and MacCready were now leaving Abernathy Farm after a long morning, and were only about fifteen minutes away from home. You turned around to look at him while walking backwards, to speak your mind.
"Hey Robert, do you have any suggestions on how we can find The Railroad? I've been thinking about it but I have no idea where to start." You confided.
He thought for a moment before shrugging. "No clue, really. They are a group of secretive loonies, if you ask me. ..All I know is that people say to 'follow the freedom trail', whatever that means."
