Just text dad. Just text him. That's it. Just text Jacob.

And get an apartment in the exact neighborhood I was looking in. For the exact price. And furnished.

Just text him.

Gah!

Liz said I could rent your 1 BR. Still available?

Maybe he blocked me, I thought as I waited an entire minute for his response.

Yes. Want it?

Yes.

Okay. I'll send the address and meet at 5:00 to give keys.

Today?

I don't have time for games, Charlotte. Yes.

As my blood boiled, I took a few breaths.

Okay.

I looked up at the brick building and couldn't believe my good fortune. And then I saw a black Lincoln pull up and a certain CEO exit the back. It felt very Fifty Shades. I just needed a helicopter and my virginity. Both were not present.

He walked over to me like he owned the world. "Follow me."

His coldness reminded me of our last conversation at the cabin. It was hard to believe it had been over a month.

But he left me breathless like the first time I saw him. I took a few discrete sniffs of his cologne as we rode up the small elevator. And I couldn't help but admire his close shave over those strong cheekbones.

"You're on three. My apartment is on four," he said unlocking the door, not sparing me a glance.

"Wait," I said as he walked in and I remained at the threshold. "Your apartment?"

"Yes. Didn't Lizzy tell you that I own three apartments in this building? I live upstairs when I'm in town."

"N-no," I stuttered out. "I thought you lived in Connecticut when you were working here..."

"No," he said waiting for me to enter the rather spacious apartment. "That house is mainly for entertaining."

"Oh." I lost my entire vocabulary. But my eyes kept taking in the beautiful apartment that was likely the best one in the neighborhood. Well, that wasn't occupied by a millionaire.

"Are you going to enter or shall I conduct the tour from here?"

"I uh...yes," I said as I tried to get out of my own way. "Sorry. I just figured..."

"Yes. Well, I'm sure you don't have to worry about seeing me around. I'm sure I'm the last person you wish to run into after work."

"Okay," I said taking a step inside the apartment.

"Are we done?"

"W-what?"

"Are we done standing around?"

"Sorry."

"Let's get this over with," he grumbled as he walked down the hall. I followed close behind, having to practically run to catch up. "Kitchen. Bathroom. Bedroom." He was pointing as he spoke.

"It's nice," I said looking in each of the rooms. "I don't mind paying more. I know you are only..."

"Charlotte," his hand flexed at his side. "The rent is fine." He walked past me.

But I grabbed his arm almost reflexively. He looked down where we touched. "Sorry." And I dropped my hand. "Jacob?"

He rubbed his hand down his face, looking completely frustrated. "Yes."
