Natasha put you to bed a couple of hours ago. She was now having a glass of wine while hanging out with the team. But here you were, running as fast as your little legs could take you to the living room where you know everybody was, where you know Natasha was.
In the middle of their conversation, the Avengers heard little footsteps heading their way. Then they heard hiccuping. Natasha turned around to see you standing in the door frame, crying, with red puffy eyes and tear stained cheeks. Not even thinking twice, she set her glass on the table and rushed towards you. She took you into her arms and when she asked what's wrong, you buried your head into her neck and hugged her tighter.
"Did you have a nightmare?" she asked, and she felt you nod. "Yeah? Okay let's go." Finally, she got up and walked towards your room with your head on her shoulder.
She began to sing and sway back and forth while patting your back. You clung onto her as Natasha tried to calm you down. She grabbed your blanket from your bed and sat in the rocking chair that was in one corner of the room. She sat you on her lap, your back against her chest, and covered the both of you with the blanket. She began rocking you back and forth, and she continued for a while, waiting for your cries to stop.
Though, something felt wrong. It felt as if it had all happened before. A déjà vu. You stayed like this, thinking before admitting to her... "This is strange."
"It is?" Natasha stopped rocking you and stabilized the chair. You turned so now you were facing her. You looked up as Natasha looked down, and she looked at you straight in the eyes as you stared into hers.
"I think... because... Well I suppose it's because I'm too old. Isn't it!? I feel like I should be littler." you continued. Natasha stood up, still holding close, and made her way to your bed. She pulled the covers up before placing you and covering your little body back, while of course still carefully listening to you.
"Well, you should be five years old, in fact. You were five years old when this happened." she said while properly tucking you in. She said it in her usual soft tone, as if it were a normal thing to say, and you looked over at her, confused.
"So, why aren't I five years old? I'm not five, I'm nine years old. Why is my age all wrong?" you tried to sit up, but Natasha pushed you back down.
"You know why." she said. She smiled down at you and tucked a piece of your hair that had fallen in front of your face behind your ear, and then let her hand rest on your cheek, and began to run her thumb across it gently.
"Because this is a memory." you looked down at your hands and started to play with your fingers. Natasha though quickly to two fingers into her chins, lifting your head back up, so you would look at her.
"That's right." Natasha took your hands in hers. You held onto them tightly, afraid that if you let go of her she was going to disappear earlier than she's supposed to, and you brought them close to your chest.
"It's happening again, another memory. This is happening more and more. I'm not really here. I'm too old. It's like... the maths doesn't work."
"That's right." she whispered and smirked. You smiled at seeing her famous smirk again, but your smile quickly faded away as you realized something.
