To many, especially dancer's, december rhymed with nutcracker season. Natasha's dance studio was no exception to the rule, and obviously as the last days of december approached, so did their show.
You had grown up in this studio. At times it felt more like home than home. You rolled over for the first time in Natasha's office, you watched older girls dance from a playpen Natasha set up for you and you took your first step in one of these rooms. You just spent so much time there, you knew the place like the back of your hand even though you were barely one year old.
Everyone got used to having a little baby around. You were like the little mascot of the studio. And cheered, and clapped, and giggled over anything. When a dancer tripped you laughed, making it seem as not as big of a deal. When the music topped you always clapped, being the best supporter ever.
Natasha had you up her hip as she ran around, backstage, making sure every got in the right costume and everyone's hair was perfect. "Nat, we need you."
"Okay, let me just... here, keep Y/n for a second. Y/n, be good." She handed you to someone else, running off to help someone. You began to play with the costume. The fabric was fun, and the details sewed onto them were very entertaining.
You whined the minute Natasha came back and pulled you off them, making the grabby hands until Nat handed you your bear. "There we go." She sighed once you fully calmed down. She didn't want to handle one of your tantrums and all the last minute things simultaneously.
The minute the music started, you watched with Natasha everyone dance with wide eyes. Sure, you watched them dance and rehearse every single day these pasts few months, but this was different. With the costumes, the lights and the music, it became magical.
You wiggled and whined in Natasha's arms. At some point, she had to let you down because you were getting unmanageable. She quickly regretted it however when you began to crawl on the stage, and she had to run after you to get you back for everyone's safety.
"Maybe some day you'll also dance on this stage, but for now we can watch it from here okay малыш?" She told you softly, the hope that you would follow in her footsteps one day only growing more and more every day as she watched you grow. For now, you were just watching the show together. You, in your mother's arms, which was truly the best seat in the house. (translation : baby)
As time went on, dancers walked around trying to change as fast as humanly possible. It was a whole mess no one was looking forward to cleaning up after. But, it's part of the charm right?
"Miss Romanoff? Could you please help me with my hair? It's a mess..." One of her students asked, as everyone else around her seemed busy with someone else, and she really needed help.
"Sure come here. You're gonna have to hold Y/n on your lap though. I'd let her roam around, but she seems to want to cause mischief tonight." Natasha grabbed her chair for her student to sit on and placed you on her lap the minute she was sat. Just like earlier, you played with the costume. The fabric felt funny under your touch, and you loved it. And honestly, no one minded because as long as it kept you occupied and happy... it was all that mattered.
"I saw her trying to sneak on the stage earlier."
"Yeah, she did. My sneaky little one. One minute she was next to me and the next she was about to join you guys." Natasha recalled the events laughing, as you just looked up at her innocently. "Yes, we're talking about you missy."
"Hey Y/n, do you want the doll?" She waved the object in the air in front of you. You whined as she held it up just a bit out of your reach. You could've probably grabbed it, but she had a firm grip on you to stop you from falling over.
"Good luck getting that back later." Natasha laughed as you literally snatched the doll from the girl's grip and held it close to your chest until you were sure no one was going to steal it away from you.
"I won't need it, don't worry. She can have it."
"Well, your hair is done. Off you go now." She patted her student's shoulders before walking around and picking you up one again.
The show went on and Natasha disappeared a couple of times again. You decided to be chill about it for once. You were also bribed by the other dancers so that also helps. Any evidence of all the treats that you got was quickly gone.
"You know what we should do?" Another one of Nat's student asked her friend. In hushed whispers, she shared her plans, they immediately agreed and got started.
They slipped away quickly, making their way to Natasha's office. They knew their dance teacher had a little tutu for you. You were just a toddler, but it was a must-have even though you couldn't dance. They didn't find it in here, so perhaps she left it at home. Thankfully though, Natasha had dressed you in a little dark red velvet dress with golden details on it, you would just fit right in. "It's okay, you look just as cute without one."
Just as they were about to leave, another teacher entered the room. She looked frantic but visibly relaxed at the sight of you three. "There you are, come on girls. What even are you ding in here?" She scolded gently, as they didn't have much time.
"We were looking for Y/n's bear that's all." One of them came up with a quick excuse that seemed to work, and their teacher let it go. They quickly got in line to get on the stage, the two dancers holding your hand as they walked on the stage to bow.
You walked slowly but, surely. You fell on your butt one time, and quickly got back up like the determined girl you were. You were sure of what to do now. Being on the stage was quite impressive for anyone, can you imagine a one-year-old?
You just looked around and saw everyone bow, so you tried. You bent down and quickly went back to standing up straight. Everyone clapped and cheered, which you loved. What can I say, you lived for the attention.
And naturally what did you do after? You bowed again and again until Natasha came up and picked you up herself. You were a tad mad someone interrupted your fun, but forgot all about it when you received so many praises and kissed all over your face from your favourite person.
"Well done my baby."
