I laid back onto the couch and looked at the ceiling. I looked at the remote for the TV longingly, but it was too far for me to reach. I was all alone. I should really get a roommate.
I got up from the couch after a few minutes of thinking about roommates, and walked to the kitchen. There were dirty dishes everywhere, and it smelled a little bit like mold. I'm a mess. I didn't really want to do the dishes though. I meaninglessly walked through my apartment for another 10 minutes before finding myself back at the couch, in the same spot as I was before. The only thing I gained from that walk was a reminder of how much I need to do.
I picked up my phone, and decided to address the elephant in the room. I had the same phone as I did from high school, after all. I went through my contacts, and found the one I was looking for.
The line rang for a minute, and I called again. And again. And again. My head was in my hands by the fifth answering machine. I don't care anymore. I guess I just missed having someone to talk to. Or maybe I just wanted closure. I pulled myself out of my thoughts, and stood up, put on my shoes, and walked out of that hell hole.

I walked through the city, and my feet felt like they were about to fall off because of the cold. I shivered, and looked at the people around me.
One girl was walking with her friends, and they were wearing very revealing dresses and holding red solo cups. Typical. Another guy was wearing full business attire, and seemed to be on the phone with someone important.
The lights shining from clubs and restaurants were illuminating the streets in a way that reflected off the asphalt and back onto the buildings. I turned onto main street, and heard someone fighting. I turned my head to see some middle aged men brawling outside a bar. Also typical. Imagine having a life.
I stopped at a familiar place, and noticed it was open. What time is it? I opened the door and saw the face that I was half hoping to see, half dreading. My eyes met Kenmas, and I walked up to the cash register.
"Uh... what time is it?" I asked, and he looked deeply disturbed.
"4 AM. Why are you awake?" He asked.
"I dunno. Just was, I guess." I deadpanned, and when our eyes met, he looked more worried than I wanted him to.
"Do you want what you usually order?" He asked.
"Yeah." I may have smiled a little bit.
"It'll be ready in a little bit." He got to work.
"Wait- I didn't get to-." I struggled to find the words.
"It's on the house." He said quietly. I sat down at a small table, and noticed that I forgot to bring my phone with me. The cafe was deserted. I thought it was like 10:30PM or something.
Kenma sat in front of me, and handed my drink to me.
"What's going on?" He looked concerned. That's what I could tell from his blank face.
"Did you get a new phone number?" I suddenly asked, addressing what I needed to.
"Yeah, when I went to college," He said, confused.
"Oh. I'm so stupid." I sighed, my heart creeping up my throat.
"Did you try to call me?"
"Yes."
"What about?"
"To apologize." I spoke honestly.
"Is that really necessary?" His voice raised just a little bit, but enough to notice.
"For me, yes." I struggled to move my eyes from my drink.
"Why? Hasn't it been long enough to move on?" It was enough. I had moved on.
"Yeah. this conversation is stupid." I tried to change the subject. "What are you studying?"
"Music theory and statistics." He said quickly.
"That's fun."
"How's your life going?" He played along with this.
"It's a mess, but that's besides the fact." I laughed a little at that.
"A mess enough to not know what time it is?"
"Pretty much." I laughed out loud at my own stupidity, and quickly noticed that I was making direct eye contact with him.
"Anything else chaotic?" He asked, and I thought about my apartment's current state.
"Not really," I started, "How are you, really?"
"I'm good. I like this job, and I'm doing well in my classes." He smiled slightly.
"That's good. I should probably get home." I sighed, and he nodded.
"It's 4:25, by the way." He reminded me, and I laughed before waving and leaving the cafe.
