Chapter 1
LUNA'S POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wake abruptly to a scream piercing the night. Barely lifting my head, I look up from my hiding place at what is going on. As I expected, I see someone, a girl by the looks of her, running down the side of the hill. Behind her is a group of about forty people, and when I see them, my blood starts to boil. The hunters.
They were hired by our government, or as we are supposed to call them now, the saviors, for apparently without them we'd all perish in a long torturous death. Yeah, right. But, anyways, the government hired the hunters to hunt down and stop the threats to their perfect little system.
I guess they found another, and sure enough, when I look back, I see a bolt of lightning streak across the distance in between them and strike down the leading man. Amazing. Then she shocks me by turning around. Even from the distance I'm at, I can see the lightning dancing above her palms with her hair flying around her. Beautiful. She then starts walking towards them, though I think it looked more like prowling. The hunters seem to stutter in their advance for a moment, but then continue towards the girl. All of a sudden, the girl leaps towards them, seeming to dance through their ranks. Twist, turn, slash, jump, and in her wake, a mound of bodies starts to form. Then I see him.
The monster. The man who changed my life forever. I watch as he dodges one bolt, then another, and another, until he is face-to-face with the girl. I watch in horror as he grabs her neck and snaps it as easily as he would a twig. Murderer.
General Bane M. Lucifer. The "M." is so the government knows he is a "mutant". Well that's what the government calls us, for they know only we can stand up to there corrupt system. So they turn the public against us by making us seem like monsters. If we don't have support, then we can't rebel against them. Also, it kind of helps when someone tells them about us, and then they send the hunters after us. I'm guessing that's what happened to this "electro-girl". I'm impressed that she lasted this long on her own. Mostly all the rebels are in one location plotting on how to take down the government, or as they call them "The Tyrants". They call themselves "The Evos", it's short for evolved because apparently that's what happened to us, we evolved.
I'm one of the lucky ones who have gotten a gift. In fact, I have been granted two. It's not a common thing, yet it has happened on several occasions before, like our leader Victor Reed. He has the ability to see the future and super strength, making him the perfect warrior and strategist. His name even inspires people, for it sounds like victory.
He's lucky, his name has power, I'm just plain old Luna Felis. Well, I guess our names kind of predicted our abilities, Victor has a knack for winning almost everything he does, and me, well, my main ability is the power to change into animals. My favorite animal to change into is any type of cat, and Felis means cat in some foreign language, not sure which though.
My second ability is being able to control and manipulate fire. It comes in handy when you are on the run like me, being able to start a fire whenever you want without needing multiple tools. Also it creates no smoke, so I couldn't be tracked by the hunters. I guess that's a plus.
I basically jump out of my skin when General Bane gives a victorious war cry. As if anyone, except me of course, can hear him. He's basically just gloating now.
"Go jump off a cliff you heartless jerk", I growl under my breath.
I stay hidden in my little, secluded lookout spot until he's gone, and I wait about twenty minutes more before I decide it's safe enough to stand up. It's the perfect place to hide. I'm in a glade of trees that hide me, yet allow me to look out at what is going on, just like tonight. I turn around from the edge of the trees and walk a little farther in to the place where I had made camp about a week ago. It's a large clearing with a stream connected to a cute little pond, the perfect place to fish and hunt for deer and other animals had come to drink there several times already.
Also over to the side is the stump of a tree that must have fallen a long time ago for the top of it was smooth, the type of smooth that only time can create.
I walk over to the pond and look down at my reflection. I have wavy light brown hair that falls down to the middle of my back. Next my gaze drifts up to my face. I have an angled face, due to the many times I have changed into a cat, and bright blue eyes. My mother's eyes. That's the only thing that connects me to my parents otherwise I look nothing like they used to. I go back to brooding over my reflection and decide I may not be a super-model, but I'm not unpleasant to look at. That thought makes me smile, making the reflection all the more pleasant because of it.
I look up at the sky and decide it's getting late and get up and go to the place here
I chose to sleep. It's a nice little grassy area, and there's so much grass it creates a springy bedding. I curl up close my eyes and am asleep within the minute. That night my dreams were scattered with lightning, evil laughs, and a bloodcurdling scream that I have heard many times in my dreams before.
