Chapter 15
LUNA'S POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wake up with my head throbbing. I blink trying to get my eyes to adjust to the blinding amount of light shining down onto my face. I put my hand up to shield my eyes and notice how much work it takes to lift it up. It kind of freaks me out a little until I realize how long I had to have been out for. An hour? A day? A couple days? I moan a little trying to find my voice and stand up. Okay, standing up is out of the question. I can't even lift my head up.
"J-James", I groan out. My eyes trying to locate him. I see his feet enter my field of vision. I sigh with relief.
"Luna! Oh my god are you ok? I thought, I thought..... Well I thought you had died! And then, not two minutes later, I blacked out. I was so scared as I felt my vision darken.... But then I came back about an hour later. When I saw you still out cold I went and checked that you were still breathing and had a pulse. Well, obviously you did. But, anyways, you've been out ever since." He finishes, casting a concerned glance at me.
"I'm fine", I say trying to reassure him,"how long have I been out?" I start coughing from talking too fast and too loud.
He waits until I finish then says,"two days."
I gasp without meaning to. Two days! I haven't eaten for almost three days! Oh my goodness! I feel light-headed and put a hand to my forehead. James sees and runs over to me and kneels down next to me. He puts a hand on my shoulder and I look at him, into those gorgeous eyes. I clear my throat, noticing how dry it feels, and say, "why?"
He doesn't have to ask what I mean. "I think it was his his weapon because he hit me once and, after I started to run, I began to have these weird things happen to my vision. Everything went funky and after we were a ways away I passed out too. So, you were wrapped around by this weapon, I can't believe you are still alive!" He shakes his head like trying to get that vision out of his head. I then remember what happened to me after he hit me once with that thing of his...... I think James is right! But there is something.... Off about something else he said. So I decide to point it out to him.
"James, I don't think that weapon was designed to kill. He didn't seem like he was trying to kill me, he had that chance plenty of times.... He was trying to bring me in alive....", I trail off, letting it sink in. Why would they want to capture ME alive? After they have killed countless other Evos why spare me? I'm not special! Or.... Am I? I don't know! I don't think I am but apparently they think I am.....
"Why would they want to take you alive?", he asks, voicing my exact thoughts.
"I don't know", is all a reply. I could ramble on and on about how I cannot figure out why they wouldn't want to kill me, who this mystery man could be, and most of all, how scared I am. But I say none of this.
"Well, either way, we better get moving.... As soon as you eat and drink that is.", he turns and walks to the other side of the camp and bends over. He rummages around in his bag for a second then gets back up and walks back over to me.
As he turns around, the smell of jerky hits me as strong as a punch in the gut. I snatch it out of his hand when he hands it down to me. The first bight was savory. The flavor exploding like little fireworks in my mouth.
As soon as I'm done I already feel stronger. I try standing up again and am shocked to see I can actually get to my feet! The power of the jerky! Well.... Not really because all I can do is keep myself standing, but it's a start!
We stay at the camp for about 7 hours, waiting for me to get my strength back. Once I do though, we set out at a sprint, me in animal form, him on his feet. The land seems to fly underneath us, yet we payed it no mind. The whole way we just talked about those troubling questions on our minds. This time though, they did not trouble me so much. Talking with James while running away from this thing helped me with that problem.
It was almost dusk when we hit Mount Friola. It was an almost vertical rising mountain, and at the top it rounded off..... I think? It was hard to tell for the moutain pierced the clouds and I could barely make out the top.
We did not stop and make camp, not with what just happened so close behind us, and also because we were so close to the rebels. I could tell James was excited but me..... Well I am more worried about what they will do when I get there... And if they will punish James for it too. Well lets hope they forgot who I am.
