Chapter 6
JAMES'S POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My family and I have been walking for days. Every second feels like a minute, a minute an hour, an hour a day, and a day a week. My sister doesn't seem to mind though, she just runs all around, laughing at almost everything. It's kind of nice having her around, she keeps our spirits up. My favorite part of our journey was when she made me a flower. Literally, she made me a flower. It was a bright green flower, she said she grew it like that for my eyes.
"Watch this, watch this!", she trills. I can't help but glance over at her.
I'm glad I do because at that moment she causes a bunch of plants to sprout out of the ground and launch her into the air. My heart stops, thinking she is going to hit the ground, but then another bunch of plants sprout up and catch her.
"Layla! Don't do that!" My mother scolds.
"Sorry momma" she says back looking ashamed, but out of the corner of her eye, she shoots me an amused glance. I can't help but smile at her.
"James, you have to watch your sister better!", She says to me now, "she could have gotten hurt!"
"How could I have known what she was going to do", I snap back. Apparently every time my sister does something wrong, it is some how my fault, as if I'm psychic and can know she is going to do something wrong! Ugh.
"Well, just do better next time". I don't even bother to respond back. My mother is impossible to argue with. If you have a good point she will just avoid it until you forget about it, and then she makes it seem as if it is all your fault. Smart yet frustrating.
It was afternoon, the sun hovering above the horizon. The sky was beginning to turn a a bright orange. The time before the sunset is beautiful, almost as beautiful as the sunset itself. It was then that I saw them.
At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me from looking at the sun, but after blinking several times I had to conclude that they were really there. The Hunters.
They must have seen Layla launch herself into the air! Otherwise they wouldn't be coming for us so intently. We have to run or be sold into slavery, I choose to run.
"Hunters!", I scream at the top of my lungs. Mother snaps her heard around so fast her hair flys around her like it's weightless. In a strange way, it was breath taking, but then I saw the look of horror and despair in her eyes and knew that we had very little hope of escaping.
I grabbed Layla's hand and, half pulling, half dragging her, sprinted in the opposite direction. I can feel her stumbling down behind me, but I don't care, all I care about is getting us all out of here safe, safe and alive.
I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins, pushing me farther than I could normally go. My will to survive screaming in my head, allowing me to run farther than I could ever run if not in this situation. I know my mother feels the same way for she has kept pace with me the whole time, though my sister was becoming more limp the farther we run for no matter how much you try, everyone has a limit.
And ours came at the top of a hill. We had tried our best, but they had caught up with us. My heart was pounding against my chest. Like my body was screaming "I don't want to die!" But no matter how much you will something to happen, some things are out of your control. We had to stand and fight. My sister must have realized this to, for at that moment she yanked her hand out of mine and turned to face them. My heart stops as I turn around to see what is going on. She moves so quickly that by the time I turned around she had already felled one of the hunters. I then see, as if in slow motion the gunman raise his weapon. I see the gun backfire and the bullet fly out, but cannot hear a thing, for the horror of the situation has blocked out my thoughts. I watch as it hits her body and notice for the first time how small and frail she looks, then as her body hits the ground with a soft "thump." My hearing is back.
I wish it wasn't, for then I would not hear the anguish in my mother's cry as she charges the other men. I don't have time to think of a way to help for one of the hunters flanks me and attacks. I knock the gun out of his hand faster than he can see, then punch him right in the face. I draw back to hit him again, but freeze as I hear a soft "oh."
I turn with dread, knowing what I will see. My mother falling to the ground, a blood soaked sword sliding out of her chest. The blood seems unreal. It expands until it is the only thing I can see. Red, red everywhere. I'm knocked back to the world of reality by a sharp smack in the back. I feel a pair of hands push me to my knees. I struggle to get up, but realize it is futile as another pair of hands push me even harder to the ground, pulling my head back, forcing me to look at the last hunter. My mother's killer.
"Well, well, well, look who we have here", he says to me, "the last of the Evo family. What's your ability, huh? Well, obviously it can't be very good for we caught you like it was nothing!" He starts to laugh and the other hunters join him a moment later. I glare up at him, and somewhere deep down inside me, a burst of courage boils up to the surface and I spit right in is face. He stops laughing.
"You little rotten punk", he says through gritted teeth. I moan in pain as the two hunters holding me tighten their grip and push my harder in to the ground.
"I tried being nice with you but no more", he says with much venom in his voice, "now tell us what your power is!"
"No" I say back in as calm of voice I can, knowing it will piss him off even more. And it does.
"Fine, we can find that out through a DNA test anyways. Now, a more important question, where were you and your family of mutants going?
"Ha! For a more important question, you are getting the same exact answer. Plus this, 'fuck off'!"
I've gone to far. He looks down at me with hatred in his eyes. I know this is going to end badly for me. Either I will end up dead or a slave. Fear bubbles up inside my chest, expanding until blots out everything else. I look up at the man.
"Fine, if you don't want to answer we can do it the hard way", he twitches his sword ever so slightly, but I still get the message all the same. "I will ask you one more time though, where were you going, was it to the rebels? Do you know where they are? Tell me!"
I open my mouth to respond to him but then shut it again. I am not going to say anything at all. I watch as his face grows furious and he draws back his sword. So this is how I die. My last thoughts were of regret of what I hadn't done in life. Or so I thought they were my last thoughts.
