Archer Enterprises took years of hard work and persistence to make it a big name in the world of architecture. Where there are millions of companies in the race, it's difficult to stand out and attract potential buyers, investors, and clients.
Being an architect isn't an easy job from any angle. There are lots of sleepless nights, hours of brainstorming to come up with creative and possible ideas, hiring the right crew, selecting the right interior designer, and supervising the materials that lay the foundation of the artwork you're working to turn from paper to reality.
In a world full of competition, winning is all that matters and so far I've been at the top of the game. Superior to the other contestants who are just as hungry for the position as me.
Putting away my empty mug of coffee I decide to get some work done. But the decision crumbles to nothing when my best friend barges inside throwing the 'knocking mannerism' out my eight hundred and fifty feet high window.
"You've got a minute?" Connor is already in the chair by the time he asks. I don't know why he even bothered asking.
"Of course. It's not like I run a million-dollar company and have work to do."
"It's about Evelyn."
Putting the lid of my laptop down I give Connor my whole attention. "What is it?" The teasing smile he throws my way only aggravates me.
"The email I sent them a week ago—as per your order, well they haven't responded. So I think that equals rejection. She has a small company so I assume her staff keeps track of emails in case of potential clients. I'm certain they wouldn't have missed it."
Pure burning rage bubbles inside of me. I'm screwing things up when I'm supposed to fix them.
The image of her wearing the red short dress that left her lo–
"Warren!" Connor is in my face.
"Yeah," I mumble.
"You're thinking about her." It's not even a question.
"What do we do now?" I ask instead and his smile tightens.
"Well, I don't know man. You broke her heart and now you're trying to put it back together. It's not that easy Archer. The girl punched you when you asked her out to dinner. Just think what she would have wanted to do after we sent her that email." Leaning my head back I stare at the ceiling.
"I just want her back, Connor." As pathetic as it sounds, it's the truth I've been denying since I saw her the first night.
After our conversation, I had decided to not move towards her, change my direction—as Connor said.
Evelyn didn't want me. She had made that very clear. And no matter what I did there'd be no changing her stance. So I accepted her decision. Even though no decent bone in my body liked the idea. If anything, everything inside of me resented the thought.
But since the night at the club, I can't stop thinking about her, which is how it has been for the past ten years. She is all my eyes search for, what my mind is fixed on, and my heart beats for.
Evelyn Melgren has no idea of the power she holds over me.
I can't let her go. I thought it'd be easy after the way she talked to me.
My stubborn heart wants to get drunk on her and never sober up. She's all I want.
Friday night reminded me of that. I can't just give up on her, not when she evokes such intense emotions inside me. Emotions that only come out when she's around. Emotions that I can't control.
